I've been thinking of signing up with a usenet service provider like Giganews or Newshosting.
Unfortunately, I'm a little clueless about usenet/newsgroups as I have been only used bittorrent in the past.
Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with using newsgroups and the aforementioned providers? |

Giganews is the best. They literally destroyed the competition by offering up to two years retention. Most other newsgroup providers only offer 3 months retention (retention refers to the accessibilty of previously posted articles). I have used them in the past. They are an excellent newsgroup provider.
Some of you are probably in the dark as to what usenet is so I will attempt to explain. Usenet is a service that provides access to newsgroups or groups which post messages. Some are text messages and some have photo or video attachments. So why would you want to use usenet? Well usenet is probably the best source for pirated videos and games and software. It is usually very fast and easy to download from. It is also unmonitored and uncensored. So information posted to usenet cannot be removed, though access to groups can be removed by the usenet provider. |

Easynews. I've been with them for 10 years. Their web interface and global search can't be beat. |

I use, and have only used Astraweb. A friend introduced me to newshosts about a year ago. Unfortunately I don't know how it compares to other newshosts.
I generally use NZBMatrix to browse for downloads and also get a retention of about 700 days which download perfectly fine.
Does anyone else know of any good NZB sites? |

I used Giganews for several years in Korea. They're by far the best but they're also the most expensive.
One thing to make sure of with any provider you choose is to get a speed test before you make a long term commitment. Korea has fast domestic connections, but doesn't have the greatest connections to the rest of the world. Giganews has a server in Hong Kong and I would routinely get speeds in the 6-7 MB/s range. Other providers I tried that only have servers in Europe/North America were much slower, never going above 1 MB/s.
But finally I must ask, why do you want to get into usenet now? Usenet was great 15-20 years ago, but it's largely pointless now. You can get much better selection from torrents these days without paying any monthly fees. I cancelled my account a year and a half ago and haven't missed it at all. |

I'll definitely take that into consideration.
I've just been hearing and reading about usenet for years. People really make it out to be the epitome of filesharing.
However, I'm getting the impression from you and some others that it is a bit dated.
Also, I have been having good success and high download speeds with bittorrent.
I guess I'm just looking to try something geeky to do. |

I frequent usenet.
astraweb is by far the cheapest. (best for the money) with a DSL connection at 10 bucks a month (Giganews & Easynews are atleast double that)
It is damn good for file sharing. You can leech w/o having to replenish (if that is what you are into), throw out a request and don't forget to thank the poster. Couldn't be simpler
I would agree that torrents are "the next thing" but seeing as how they are limited by how popular the item is, well... torrents only find use once a season on my computer. |

I dont know how it compares to the others, but I've used Supernews, and never really had an issue with them. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents. =) |

The reason I use newshosts is mainly because I came from South Africa - just 2 months ago. There our connections aren't great and the ISP's throttle the crap out of torrents. Torrent downloads I'd get maybe 10KB/s but I'd get 430KB/s (using the full line speed).
In a country like this, where the connection is good, newshosts maybe aren't needed as much.
On Astraweb, I current get between 6MB/s and 8.5MB/s. The downside I've found for newshosts is maybe the availability of what you're looking for and the fact that most things are RAR'ed and you dont get enough blocks to repair them using the PAR files. |

I'm also quite interested to know what sort of speeds people are getting on usenet in Korea. |

i use usenetserver. it's $15 a month for unlimited leech and has 2 year retention as well.
i get about 1.4mb/s on it. bittorrent can be faster sometimes (usually maxes out around 2.7mb/s), but usenet is so much cleaner. if i had access to private trackers i probably wouldn't bother with usenet.
i get nzbs from newzbin. |

This website is excellent for getting private torrent tracker invites. And, from time to time I've given a couple on ESL Cafe as well.
How well does a newsgroup like that do automation? One of the things I like is having things already d/led when I get home. |

Pretty well in fact. Sabnzbplus can be configured to be controlled over HTTPS from work, your phone etc and can be set to watch for certain nzbs (it interfaces with the APIs for nzbmatrix and newzbin). It's a bit more complex to set up but works great and will then accept scripting (so you can do things like strip out all the rubbish in some file names or move the files to a particular watch drive so they are indexed on a program like XBMC).
I should be setting up my full desktop computer in the next day or so, but I'm currently hitting up to 4.5MB/s on giganews's US servers from my asus netbook (although may try astraweb as they are a lot cheaper). |

I'm comfortably hitting 6MB/s on Astraweb's US servers over SSL now. |
