On the least favorite vacation spot thread, everyone has been putting their two cents in on what locales may not merit a second visit, but not I'd like to know what cities/countries/areas you would recommend or want to visit again for...

history/culture?
beaches/fun in the sun/lounging?
shopping/partying?

I enjoyed Angkor Wat for history, Koh Tao in Thailand for relaxing and Hong Kong for shopping, albeit on a teacher's salary.

I look forward to everyone's responses!

My favorite trip was to the Caramoan Peninsula in the Philippines (southeast Luzon). Island hopping in bangka (catamaran?) to isolated and perfect beaches. It's a tough trip to get there (no airport and no road) but well worth it.

Angkor Wat was great but also overrun with tourists which takes away a little of the specialness.

Hong Kong far exceeded my expectations although it would have been better to not be on a really tight budget.

Something that I would really like to do is a bicycle trip in Yunnan and/or Sichuan province in China. I've done a ten day trip in Taiwan and I'm convinced it is one of the best ways to see a country.

The temples at Angkor are just incredible. I haven't seen any historical sights in Asia that have impressed me more.

Partying.... has to be Thailand! Bangkok is crazy, and if you know a few Thais you can go to some awesome clubs away from the sodding Khao San road. The south is also a great party... Krabi in particular.

Chiang Mai. I've been back three times in the last two years - I definitely intend to live there at some point in my life. Amazing city.

Koh Chang, baby!

Nice beaches, cheaper than Koh Phi Phi/Samui, still not over developed (at least back in 2007)........

You'd be surprised how quickly things change in Thailand if there's money to be made. My favourite island, Ko Lanta, was very quiet just a few years ago... now it has luxury hotels springing up everywhere.

I love Thai people but unfortunately they are only too willing to destroy the natural beauty of a place in favour of making money Sad

It's easy to criticize when your belly is full.

And when our own countries have been doing the same thing for centuries.

I'll have to go with northway on that one.

Though, it is not the backpackers to blame for all the development. It is the "Starbucks" families, who bring their kids there...............they ruin it.

I think you can say the best vacation spot in Asia is a place where people keep going to. In my case, I've gone to Boracay five times and No. 6 will be this fall. Heck, I've heard of others who've been there 20+ times and the like.

That said, the reason I hit the Phils a lot is because of time and money. A flight to Manila is under four hours and Cebu Pacific Airlines' sales make trips to the PI too tempting to pass up.

I would go to Bali more but the airfare is a killer (at least 650,000 won) and the travel time is seven hours.

As for Thailand, I need to hit more Thai islands to get a better opinion about them, but I don't really care to be around a bunch of young Europeans partying and stuff.

As my original post was total BS, more realistically:

Louang Phrabang and Savannakhet in Laos.

Singapore.

Bangkok outside of Khaosan Road.

Hue in Vietnam.

The Gilis off of Bali.
