Hey, techies!
Anyone here played Far Cry? Great game...fun, exciting, hella hard...but it brings my system to it's knees!
P4 3.2C @ 3.5, Radeon 9800XT, P4C800 Deluxe, 1 GB PC3500 Kingmax, 2xWD 120GB RAID 0, Samsung 2100DF monitor (.20 DP..sweet!)...
I can play this game at 1280x1024, 2xAA and 4xAF, but that's maxed out!!
What are your rigs?
Did you play Far Cry?
What did you think? |

I haven't gamed yet, but I'll load up MVP Baseball 2004 soon...
I don't really need the power, I just like to have it should I want it. Mostly I run winamp, internet, watch tv and movies, etc... same old stuff.
I did set up a remote connection through a hub that I got so that I can now view my old laptop's screen on my new laptop. I'm using it as a big ole hard drive now.
I'll figure out how to change the screen to replace the broken one and then give it to my sister. |

Well, I don't really know...lots? I built it over some time...I guess about 3.5 million...other components.....Roland SC88, external USB 160GB HDD, Cambridge 5.1, Sony DRU510A DVD-RW, Samsung 35B DVD/CD-RW combo drive, a midi keyboard....
Problem is, I bought a lot of this stuff when it was cutting edge and paid a premium for it. The Radeon was 600,000 alone.
I should learn to wait for a generation of products to go by...I would save a bundle.....but....
I am already drooling over the X800XT card from ATI...another 600,000 PCI express is right on the doorstep, so I must use control...
SATA RAID is on my list as well....SATA drives have really come down lately. More RAM perhaps as well...that price is starting to rise.
It never ends.....
What about your rig, Giant?
BTW...Gentle Giant were a pretty funky group. John Weathers was a small influence when I was young. |

Well, not as hot as yours but here goes:
AMD XP2600
1GB DDR RAM
1 X 120GB Seagate 7200RPM
1 X 60GB Seagate 7200RPM
Sound Blaster Live 5.1
LG 4X DVD+- writer
Nvidia Geforce 4 64MB (I am not into games)
... and of course the usual peripherals like a printer and scanner.
All this was for about 1 million Won. |

You guys gotta step up to the Big Leagues for sound cards... go check out the Hercules Game Theatre XP Pro... that's what I've got on my computer at home... plugged through the optical port into my sound system. |

How much did you fork out for that set up Rylees? Is it one of the X models? Those are pricey. Or did you get the one that's a little thicker?
Those thin X models are sweet but not worth 2,000,000 + if you ask me. |

Kind of makes you feel like a fool for buying such a computer then doesn't it?
Just kidding, sounds like a wonderful system if you're into games. I stopped playing them anymore as I always get too obssessed then regret wasting so much time.

Bought it the week it was released and mentioned it in a few threads. I can't run it on the highest video settings and I have a P4 2.4 512MB with an ATI 9500 Pro 128 card. Great game but I'm stuck on the final battle- the mutated head scientist in his lair with half-dozen trigen and human bodyguards. I've tried cheats and walkthroughs and nothing has helped. I've shelved the game in favour of KOTOR for the time being. |

That's a great game too, and takes a bit of power to run. How's it work on your pro card? I used it on a regular ATI 9200 and it was OK but a little choppy during some of the battles...on 1024 res.
Are you going to dark side or lightside? I did lightside first through then darkside which was much funnier.
Make sure you get HK-47 and use him throughout Tantooine for some side splitting dialogue. |

@ shawner88: Well, I don't feel so foolish...most people are playing that game on lesser systems at 800x600. Besides, it looks fantastic. I do play some games, but not as a gamer as much as an afficionado of graphics engines. I studied graphics coding for a while, and it really amazes me what some of these games' programmers are doing now. Shader technology, shader branch prediction, vertex shading....the GPU has become every bit as complex as the CPU...moreso in many ways. Really cool. Games for me are more like appreciating art than simply playing. I can go into a level alone and just walk around inside the 3D world, admiring the textures, shading, bump-mapping, etc.. . DX9 is a great API...just waiting for programmers to really start exploiting it. Far Cry has some true DX9, VS3, PS3.0 coding, but we are still waiting for games coded from the ground up around it.
As far as work, I do a lot of home video editing, recording/video sync, photoshop and composing...a fast system is indespensible, unless you like waiting for math.
@ Giant: That;s a nice system, man. The Athlon is a great CPU....I was really torn as to buy an AMD 51-FX when I upgraded last time. The Via kt800 chipset rocks. 1GB of RAM....I guess you multitask? Well, with RAM prices as they were 4 months ago, nobody has an excuse to have too little RAM. Exception: my last system wasRDRAM-based...the 1066Mhz (RIMM 4200), 32-bit...it was pricey....fast, but pricey.
Sound...? Well, the onboard sound on the P4C is adequate for now, but you are right. I will go with Creative when I do jump into that. Good idea....very, very soon!
KOTOR was terrible IMHO. Poorly coded game...ran like crap on my machine...actually, it ran like one of those crappy ports from X-box to PC...GTA3, case in point. Too bad too....I like BioWare (Canadian!) The game "sacrifice" was great. The 6-sided-die system of combat really wasn't my thing. I guess it really was just an RPG in 3PS disguise. I really thought that real-time fighting would have made the game much, much better.
Current games include: Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, UT2004, Far Cry, Call of Duty, Max Payne 2, Painkiller.
The Thief 3: Deadly Shadows demo came out yesterday. Looks good if you are into stealth-action and have the specs.
Waiting for: HL2, Doom3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. <- WOW. Check out screenies for this game. It looks gorgeous. |
