Anything like this would likely require a forum upgrade/plugin be installed.
As an example see this:
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=1650625
works as you'd want but the forum owner is required to install a mod

The person who maintains Dave's site should just get TapaTalk installed. It's free for the site administrator and viewing forums using the TapaTalk app is great. I really wish more forums would get TapaTalk up and running on their sites, especially since it's free and easy to do.

Good luck with waiting for any kind of site upgrade to support something like that. I mean come on, look at the version of forum software this site uses. I bet there hasn't been a major upgrade to this site since the 90's.

Why should there be? Dave makes no money from this forum at all. It's a charity for him.

Ann app? The 90's called and wants to know why you are so lame. Facebook/Twitter not offering enough banality for you? Need another place to post every Dim Flicker from the bulb in your head?

Twisted Evil

Dim Flicker: Where mouth-breathers pinch out their daily thought. Launch party TBA.

I was always under the impression that this forum was a big hit driver for his money making portion of this site.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner!

Dave's started as a place where people could share ESL stuff. The job ads came afterwards. Without the forums and other stuff there'd be nothing to differentiate Daves from Craigslist.

Explain how this forum makes Dave money.

Draws hits? That isn't money, that is traffic which is potential money (does anyone here click the banners?), but not steady or significant cash. The ads on the page? They are on every page.

This forum does not make Dave money. He could easily drop it and remain where he is, albeit with less bandwidth-sucking traffic.

"And other stuff"....irrelevant to the discussion.

This forum does not make Dave money. Prove otherwise.

I'll take a guess as to how this might be.

The number of hits eslcafe.com gets pushes it up higher on the google search function...ensuring popularity and respect.

Some might suspect that the users of these forums make more hits for eslcafe than all the other types of hits combined.

The popularity of this site makes it money. If it wasn't popular people wouldn't pay Dave to place their work ads.

Anyway...just a guess.

Exactly. The forum drives a lot of traffic here, that wouldn't otherwise come here. That traffic does a number of things. Some of those people go look at the job section who wouldn't otherwise do that. People sometimes create useful threads that get linked to from other sites increasing it's search ranking, and the larger user base ensures more word of mouth advertising for the site. however creating an app for this wouldn't be counter productive. most people who would use an app would probably still use the site when they are at home/work. They might just use an app if they're out and about looking for information, or bored on a train, etc.
Even if a user exclusively used the app, they're still contributing to the value of the site by participating in threads and increasing traffic and usefulness.

How does the site make money? Have you ever counted the number of jobs that are advertized and the posted rates?

This forum does not generate any capital for Dave.

I am talking cash; not potential cash or hits or popularity. Dave's is popular now; he doesn't need this forum for anything anymore. This forum is a charity; a service for us, nothing more.

Few would argue that Dave certainly treats it like a charity.
