This may seem like an odd post with odd questions for a technology thread but here goes anyway.

On some level I hate computing and technology and would love to downsize even further the time and space it seems to take in my life. I've gone for some short periods of time using a variety of portable apps (programs run off a usb) run at the local internet cafe or somethng done quickly on the computer at the job. Eventually there's an access issue (administrative rights block) or some other problem and I go back to the drawing board or pick up another netbook. Too bad as I think some of the portable apps run very efficiently, leaving out a lot of bloated "features" etc..

I've lived in some work situations with less than ideal internet connectivity so "cloud" solutions aren't really solutions.

I'm curious about what can be done with the Samsung Galaxys and the android system and have a few basic questions for those familiar with the Galaxys. Any thoughts on good but minimal computing solutions are really welcome.

- Do most or all of the android programs for the Galaxy run offline or are they dependent on being online generally?

- How close do you think you can come to replacing your laptop or desktop with something like a Samsung Galaxy? I'm assuming I'd need to use another computer on occasion for the unusual editing of a Word document etc..

- Can you even setup a Galaxy w/o a base computer?

AGain, any thoughts on this technological/philosophical question are really welcome!!

Being the owner of a Samsung Galaxy phone, I would never get a Galaxy pad or anything and trust it would work as advertised. I got this over the Apple because of the Flash argument. Later that became useless as Flash updates, which were forced on me, rendered Flash inoperative on my phone.

I will never trust Samsung again. Ever. They do not provide new software capabilities to older hardware, and getting their software to work at all on my PC has been a losing battle. And compared to my wife's Iphone, the resale on this piece of trash is almost nothing.

Thanks for responding - I didn't know if anyone would to such a strange post!!

Thanks for your thoughts on the Samsung product. I had read about the Flash "capability" of Samsung and thought of it as a selling point but it's good to know that it's less than automatic. It may be that Android has a bit to go as well? Given my experiences with gmail issues in the past I was even a bit surprised that Google was in the OS business.

Sorry to hear about the resale issue as well.

I will say that selling my ipad (handheld), Asus netbook and Kindle here was unbelievably easy. Solid products make for easy resale I guess.

Better luck with the next piece of technology. As I say, on some level I hate most new tech stuff.....

Cheers

This was what you wanted to add to the thread? Maybe you could surprise me and take the high road and delete your comment?

My comment was no more off-topic than the tiresome crybaby whinge that Swamp has been copying and dumping on any thread that even mentions Samsung. He addressed none of your 3 questions either, so feel free to continue being a hypocrite or take your high-road and travel it yourself.

OP,

IF you want a minimal computer experience, go with the Ipad. It seems like you aren't into things like customizable UI, rooting, and thigns like that. If you jsut want something that works out of the box, updates regularly, and is easy to use, go with Apple.

If you are more of a geek then Android would be your best bet. However, be prepared to wait ages for updates (or frustrated that an update won't even be available for your device).

Thanks for responding pkang.....

Never done any rooting and UI is something of a general term to me unfortunately.

As I was mentioning a lot of the slimmed down apps from portable apps do the job quite well in many cases but there's always the issue of getting a functioning computer that lets you launch stuff from the usb. Not a given I can tell you from trying that route in a couple of 3rd world countries. I had an ipad (handheld) a few years back and it worked reasonably well for some things - apps were really coming along at that point. The problem there could be connectivity and there were definitely limits on producing something vs. just "consuming" stuff.

I guess the best approach for portability and being able to do a wide variety of tasks is still a decent netbook. It seems like Apple is narrowing the gap on that. I'm seeing some similar comments to yours about Android apps. I'm curious about upcoming windows 8 and the Windows to Go feature. Not a computer replacement but still interesting.

Thanks again for throwing your ideas into the discussion. Much appreciated.

Dad! I bet you keep a diary.

OP...yes, go with Apple. It really is idiot-proof and it seems that even modestly educated people can't get their heads around Android. I guess that's why Android is such a failure.

"Samsung has been one of the survivors, selling 6.1 million tablets last year, according to IHS iSuppli. That makes it the second largest tablet maker after Apple, with a market share of 9 percent compared with Apple's 62 percent."

Yup. The reason Ipad is destroying Android in the tablet market is because people are too stupid to wrap their head around Android. It has nothing to do with one being a better Tablet than the other.

Why the mods continue to let this troll reincarnation post on here is beyond me.

Please feel free to add something useful to this thread.

Show me where your whinge was on topic at all? You failed to answer any of the OP's questions as well, so please, fall on your sword from your high, high horse. Whiner.

Ok.

OP: have you tried a USB device with U3? It allows you to launch applications from the USB sick. I'm not a fan of U3 personally, but it sounds applicable to your situation if you want to run apps from USB. Not sure if it gets permission blocked, but if not it should work well for you.

If you want to go tablet, I don't think there is a wrong decision. Neither Apple or Android are perfect, but both are good platforms that should do what you want. As a "techie", I get asked which one to get all the time (be it phones or tablets). I prefer Android on a personal level, but I always tell people to try out both devices for a bit and see which one they like better. Again, both are great platforms and you'll probably be happy with either.

Some of you guys (carbon) need to lay off the off-topic/flamebait comments. You're supposed to be adults.
