I'm putting together some lessons for a group of about 14 students who are NZ-bound next month for a month. These are rural Korean kids (grade 1&2 middle school) who for the most part have never traveled outside Korea. They'll be doing home stays with NZ families, attending some classes in schools there, & doing a bit of touring.
Among other things, I'm planning to have them research a list of some common NZ foods. Problem is, I really have no idea myself beyond what I can glean from wiki.
What should this list include? Indigenous or imported I dont think matters, more importantly just new (to them) & interesting foods common there that they'll probably be served at some point.
Tentative items: roast lamb, fish & chips, meat pies, hangi food(?), pavlovas, hokey pokey ice cream, & [your input sought]...
Thanks for any help! |

The list you have there is pretty much exactly what I'd put.
I guess you could add :
BBQ, especially sausages.
Manuka honey
Pineapple Lumps (Choc covered pinapple flavoured candy)
Whitebait fritters
Paua
I suppose all of those things are just as Australian or British as they are Kiwi, aren't they?
NZ doesn't really have a developed cuisine. And since the influx of Asian immigrants in the 1990s it's become all very "Asia-Pacific" fusion style. |

Kiwi was a bird before it was a fruit. |

I would disagree with that. |

Then you would be wrong.
Kiwi is a Maori word that they gave to the flightless bird native to New Zealand.
Chinese Gooseberries were introduced well after that in the 20th century and renamed Kiwifruit by New Zealanders, as the Kiwi (bird) was and is a symbol of the country. |

It has been known to happen.
I was thinking of something else when I wrote that so I missed your point. |

Australia should incorporate New Zealand; problem solved. Maybe they could turn them into indentured farm hands.

The Australians already do!!Any poor Kiwi unfortunate enough to arrive on the shores of Queensland are immediately put to indentured work bending bananas (it's a little-known fact that bananas grow straight while they're on the trees). I'm not sure what happens in the other states though; possibly catching crows for the South Australians and putting the sand back for those Ozzies from WA? |
