|
|
So according to the Joongang Daily newspaper, more than half of Korean teachers convicted of sex related crimes are able to keep their jobs as teachers in Korea. Numerous teachers were accused of molesting students at the schools where they worked, but were still able to continue teaching.

What is the Korean media and public reaction? Muted yawns as not a f-ck was given.
On the other hand, if a foreign English teacher is called out for having too much consensual sex with young adult females well over the legal age of consent, the Korean media circles like starved vultures around a dead carcass, or like flies on sh-t.
When foreign teachers are accused of even inappropriate "touching" of children (such as hugging a young child), the media throws an absolute hissy fit and the Korean national assembly rushes to pass additional laws requiring strengthened background checks and even greater suspicion toward foreigner English teachers is created.
The double standard Koreans display with regard to foreign professionals vs Korean nationals is just sickening.
Let's be clear here, I am not advocating for foreign teachers to be treated as laxly as Korean teachers. I am calling for Korean teachers to be subject to just as much scrutiny and just as much suspicion, if not more suspicion, than foreign teachers. If Korea truly cares about its children, it should do more to protect them from sexual predators, regardless of nationality.
The recent scandals as portrayed in Korean film Dogani, clearly show that Koreans care much more about saving face and protecting professional reputations than they do about protecting or safeguarding children. |

This pisses me off to no end.
Accused is one thing, convicted - that's losing your job and ability to work around children, in my books. |

As the link you yourself provided shows the reaction was MUCH more than "muted yawns"

Parents are voicing concerns about the lenient punishments and the education offices’ unwillingness to reveal information about teachers who have a record of sexually assaulting minors and others.
“If my child’s teacher is a sexual offender, how can I trust the teacher?” said Lee Seom-sook, head of a parents’ association called Haksamo.
“Teachers play a key role in developing students’ characters. But I think those sexual offenders are not qualified to teach students, and they should be dismissed no matter the motivation or degree of the crimes,” Lee said.
Parents’ associations are calling for sterner measures against those teachers. Representative Joo, the Saenuri lawmaker, echoed those parents’ voices.
“Many countries apply ‘zero tolerances’ against sexual offenders,” he said. “We should adopt harsher punishments against sexual offenders, especially those who victimize minors.” |
Both parents and lawmakers are calling for "sterner measures".

Or how about this?
But I guess you'd rather take a fictionalized film as evidence. |

yeah being accused REALLY shouldn't hold any water
cuz i've known girls (girls i've dated) who have said they said their teacher molested them because he gave her a bad mark on a test
it's ridiculous
being convicted, sure whatever do whatever you want to the convict
but accused? |

I am puzzled that the punishments seems to be at the discretion of the education office, not the courts? There are no mentions of jail time.
I mean wouldn't a judge rule "can't be around kids, or work in childrens education." That would overstep the education office's lack of punishment. |

The 35 who committed sexual assault against the students from their own school were all allowed to continue teaching? That's is messed up beyond repair.
I'm not too worried about the guy paying for sex from a random 17 year old on the internet versus the guy who targets people he should be taking care of without trying to stick his peppero in their panties. |

You missed the point. I think the OP meant that if this is the only Korean source about Korean TEACHERS(hundreds caught) guilty of sexual relations with their students then it is a mute reaction comparably speaking to the uproar when only one "foreign" teacher is accused. BTW, your sources are not Korean and not about Korean TEACHERS. And what part of Dogani was fiction? |

The central theme of Dogani was true (the pedos, tricking the grandparents to sign a statement and take "blood money", etc) but other scenes were made up to make for a better movie. |

Its a cultural difference. Saving face.
Koreans get away with anything so long as they at least attempt to do it discretely.
Westerners on the other hand do things blatantly and shamelessly, which forces a response. |

That's a bunch of horse youknowhat, like Koreans know how to take pictures of women on the beach or upskirt shots while foreigners just aren't discrete enough aye? You're gold, tell us more. |

Do things like what? In this case, the foreigners' behavoir you have quoted is "having too much consensual sex" with other adults. You can't possibly believe that this behavoir forces a response. |

As for me, I have been studying the reactions of the observers in these kind of cases and it is amazing how fast people will throw justice and fairness out the window and let emotion dictate the course of action when these type of crimes occur.
I like justice, not vigilantism or kangaroo courts. I do not like emotion over-ruling sound judgment or tossing mercy to the wayside.
People are just too quick to leap to judgment in these cases and refuse to hear all the evidence or how it legally applies. |
