The proof is in the pudding. There is something seriously wrong with a country and a culture where so many people (both the very young and especially the very old) are offing themselves on such a massive scale.

I dont know.. I didnt search very hard, but I would like to see the comparison between 20 somethings and 30 somethings here versus other countries. I am sure it is higher, but I wonder how much higher.

Most of the numbers, from what I have read anyway, come from old people people off-ing themselves when they become a burden on their family due to chronic illness. Personally I am all for assisted suicide in these cases and this crap shouldnt be listed in this kind of database, unfortunately it is illegal and usually people take the matter into their own hands.

There is no requirement for that to be true. Even if you formed an ideal society, there would always be some pesky thorn. Korea is just fine.

Korea is just fine because it is fuked, and becasue things like the suicide statistics clearly indicate how very fuked it is, I dont have to argue with ignorant people about why its one of the more unpleasant places of the world to live, i just show them the evidence.

So yes, its just fine.

You don't need to be a Korea basher to know that Korea is clearly not just fine. Imagine if you are related to one of those who committed suicide. Would you be so flippant?

Korea is a joyless soulcrushing culture of conformity and prescribed obligation. It is hardly surprising that people drink, smoke, and top themselves so much.

And why, other than your own ethnocentric, western mindset, within the cultural context, is it a bad thing?

Having said that, I hope noone will take any morbid satisfaction from these statistics. Let's keep our humanity. Suicide is a tragedy. It isn't something someone does on a whim. They've usually been suffering for a long time. And they've left behind a suffering family. I have serious resevations about many aspects of Korean society, but I wouldn't wish tragedy on anyone. Remember those killing themselves leave behind wounded families.

Let's stay decent.

But why not aim high and seek the ideal? Too thorny a task?

They could already BE the ideal.

Improving one thing can worsen another. USA has freedom to have guns, and with that comes unnecessary death. KR has a strong work ethic, good education, and low obesity, with that comes pressure, and senseless death.

There is no fairy dream world guys. Idea

What does one have to do with the other? Is this the two wrongs make everything "fine in Korea" argument?

It's not "an argument" Atwood. It's now life works, not "wrongs", reality.

Korea has a good work ethic? Huh. I'll have to wake my 3 co-teachers from their daily 2 hour snooze to ask their opinions on that matter.
