Quote:
I observe on a daily basis people bumping into each other on the street without making any apologies. I see others forcing their way in and out of elevators and never making an effort to avoid touching other people. I sometimes scream at those who push others deliberately in public, never waiting for other people to go first. They do not even realize what they are doing, for they are so used to living without realizing how barbaric they can be.

The number of people who smoke while walking in a crowd and spit everywhere shocks me. My fear of people touching and pushing me in public places has grown over the years. Some buildings reek of foul smells because their bathrooms are wide open and visible from the hallways and lobbies.

Nice to see that even Koreans recognize what we expats have largely been complaining about for years. The real question is, will Korea ever really change?

Korea is still 'barbaric in some ways

A more serious problem arises when people decide to unleash their inner instincts and let their myopic self-centeredness go wild, creating a culture of barbarity. To me, both barbarism and barbarity in Korea's modern history has consisted of physically touching others without permission and not subsequently apologizing. It is not recent news that many educated people, who are among the elite in our society, have been caught groping people.

She got groped, by an elite, guaranteed.

It's really amusing when you flip them off. For some reason that extremely pisses of a Korean man. Even though they were in the wrong, they will come at you like you punched them.

If I am on a subway train, for example, and I see the proverbial human wall at the station, I simply burst right through them. Nothing polite about it. Clearly, education and signs have done little. People have to realize that a) that hurts/sucks and b) I basically forced him to do that.

I do the same with elevators. If people try to shove in first, I barge them right out of the elevator and then go on my merry way.

Tokyo is more crowded than Seoul. So is Manhattan.

False. And it's not even close.

Yeah, I just googled it and Tokyo is 2.7X less population density. That means a hell of a lot less pushing.

And Japanese manners and culture are different.

I see it this way: Korea has taught me, Koreans do not respect weak people. I am not weak and I do not wish to disrespected. So I assert myself when necessary.

Sure, and these are influenced, in part, by population density.

That's not really the point. The Yamanote Line is far busier than any subway line in Seoul and I never get pushed and shoved there. The passengers are just far more courteous.

Nail on head. Its a good article. The author has obviously spent time abroad.

The problem is that for manners to work, it has to be a group effort.

There's no point being the only person with manners among a horde of barbarians. They will simply view you as weak.

Is this why we are still forced to cook our own meat over a heat source

Dave's is always the same -- "those savages, when will they learn our ways!". And then these people wonder why nobody likes them in this country. Idea

Funny, you'd think that an article on barbaric Korean behavior would have made some mention of table manners. When food is placed in front of them they're little better than, as a friend of mine put it, "cavemen with smartphones."

And she seems to be fine with that. At least she didn't find it worthy of mention in her little article. Confused
