He got 36 years, but can get parole much earlier.

This is the real shame, IMO:
Quote:
he ship's billionaire owner was found dead about four months ago after fleeing arrest, and three of his relatives were sentenced last week to up to three years in prison for corruption.

Up to three years is woefully lenient.

Well, the corrupt relatives didn't do the killing by negligence/cowardice so their sentencing should have been based only on the crimes which they actually committed, to wit: corruption.

The ship's captain's sentence, of course, is being appealed by the defense. That is, after all their job to seek for the most favorable resolution for their client. Also doing their job is the prosecution who, no doubt, will appeal the sentence as to its leniency.

Maybe Steelrails can lead a campaign to the verdict overturned. After all, he didn't do anything wrong. Shocked

Really? You think that's what I thought? Can you post any quotes in context to support that?

Anyway, there's going to be an opera based on this saga. It's going to be called: Flying Koreanman.

Prologue: the disgraced captain is incarcerated, available for parole every ten years.

Act I: ten years have past, he's meeting the parole board. He sings: "Where are the corrupt bureaucrats who took the money and Ok'd the re-modelling of the ship? Where are the corrupt politicians who hushed up the coast guard incompetence?" Chorus: The church group spent a fortune building a giant statue of the dead ship's owner bemoans the lack of funds to buy the captain's freedom.

Act II: another ten years have past, he's again fronting the board. He sings: "Next time I promise that I'll at least get wet." Chorus: Families of the drowned sing: Where are the compensations we'd been promised?

Act III: one-third re-mission for good-behaviour, the captain is paroled. He flies out of Incheon Airport. He lands in China, there he meets the supposedly dead ship's owner. They sing: "죠와전내, 죠와졌어, 몰아보게 죠와졌어..."

The Captain is not to blame. The whole country seems to have some serious logic block.

I was in a taxi today and the driver marvelled at how I did up my seatbelt, as I always do. He said NO Koreans do it.
Do Koreans think the laws of physics don't apply in the back seats of taxis? STUPID Shocked

He was simply being a normal Korean, but he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Gunhye is mainly to blame.
And the owner, who may have "died" apparently.

But they need a low level scapegoat, so the capt it is.

Actually, he is.

Glad you used the word "seems".

There are Koreans, in Korea even, who do use seat belts while in a vehicle.

Well, Korea's not the only place with odd laws concerning seat belt usage. Many taxis in China, for instance, have that ridiculous seat cover that prevents the passenger from using the belts in the rear seat.

Leaving the, at best, sweeping statement aside, no, the captain was not at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was criminally derelict.

What you see quoted is yet another lack of logic.

The captain is ultimately responsible for everything that happens on board the vessel.

Safety awareness in Korea is appalling. I see examples of it all the time.

I have seen Korean workmen use grinders many times. Do they wear
hearing and eye protection? No.

Our apartment complex is being painted right now. There are guys
hanging in chairs 18 floors up on chairs hung by ropes. Do they wear
safety harnesses? No.

Do Koreans stop at red lights? No.

This list could be endless..............................................

The entire country is just fantastically unsafe. The fault actually lies
squarely in the lap of the government. Bad governance, collusion,
corruption.

The Sewol Captain is merely a symptom of a much bigger problem.

There were only two ways off that ship for the crew... drowning as a hero or life in prison. It brings a whole new meaning to survivors guilt. (I am not referring to the captain, but to junior officers)

+1

Korea is trying to expunge their collective responsibility by scapegoating one man.

But the emotionally-driven legal process and the regularity of serious accidents here only reinforce Koreas third-world approach in the eyes of the international community.

Nothing will change until the whole slapdash mentality changes and deeds start to match words. When will that be?...don't hold your breath.

In all my years here its hard to think of any instance that a Korean has done a task well, with care, preparation, or precision. They do everything halfcocked.
