I saw a blog at random this weekend that said soju is literally industrial waste. They bottle it and package it as the equivalent of GRAS and voila, two birds with one stone. The chaebol make a sizable profit selling the swill which once metabolized by the population isn't industrial waste they need to pay to dispose of. Genius idea.

I hate soju. I only drink it with bbq and friends, and nowadays I'm vegan so no more soju for me. Beer on the other hand, well I really like beer. But I wonder if beers here might not be much the same. Hite/Jinro beers for example I've heard are only watered ethanol, food coloring and beer flavor. From my personal experience, I think the Hite/Jinro beers have a definitely high hangover ratio to amount consumed. OB beers seem to be 'cleaner' and don't leave me with a weird hangover after just two bottles.

"Industrial waste" might be pushing it. It's cheap swill for sure, but no worse than the likes of Great White or Golden Glow back in NA. Funny (or telling) that bottom tier, wino fuel makes it big here.

I'm with chaz in that I only drink the soju if I'm in a restaurant and the Koreans decide that's the drink of choice - then I'll imbibe. Otherwise I steer clear of the stuff.

Makkeoli, on the other hand, I've got a taste for. Doesn't seem to mess with my system too much unless I drink a shitload of it, and I've heard it said on occasion that it's healthier than soju - but who the hell knows.

Korean beer sucks, but I'll drink it if that's what's being poured.

I flat out refuse to drink soju. Sometimes you have to trust your instincts. Everything about it screams avoid - the low price, the foul taste, the excruciating hangover and so on.
With Korean friends or not, I don't try to hide my disdain of that horrendous gutter swill. The sooner people realise just how bad it is, the better
Then they might start producing half decent beers.

Soju goes well with Korean food, especially soups. Shocked

Are Koreans trully capable of climbing such a mountain of a task?

North Korea has better beer than here, and even Philippines managed to make a decent beer. I think they can. It is up to the people to stop liking shit.

There's definitely something not right about it. The hangover is not even like a normal alcohol hangover; it's more like shock from toxic chemical overdose.

I also refuse to drink it. I never budge on that and Koreans are pretty cool about it, generally. I think on some level they know it's crap, but it's the national drink so they have to at least try to get you to drink it.

Korean beer and soju rotted my guts. So did the spicy food. I've lived here for years and kept drinking and eating that Korea garbage until my stomach gave up.

You get what you pay for.

But if it's a very cheap drunk you're looking for, a trip to Soju Island may well be in the cards.

Recreational alcohol? Isn't that when Koreans go "hike" up mountains and then get smashed on Soju?

I generally steer clear of anything cheap enough for homeless people.

Don't disrespect the homeless. They know a bargain when they see one. Very Happy

Soju is bad mojo. I played along for awhile but concluded it was simply damaging.

Ethanol.
Used to calm the population.
Opiate of the masses, as they say.
