Why is this news? Its been happening for the past 10 years at least. Korean guys are afraid of competition, they can never win on a level playing field.

I really don't understand why people continue to get up in arms when they find these places. Yes, they exist, but we know they exist. There absolutely should be an anti-discrimination law on the books, but the more that foreigners complain about discrimination in the context of drinking establishments, the less likely they are to actually get anything done.

This is pretty tame compared to how things were in the past. So much of the nightclub scene used to at least have age restrictions (young and old). You just had to know which clubs you were 'appropriate' for.

Also it was ridiculous to watch foreigners trying to completely ignore the protocol, not order food, drink the cheapest beer and then try to hit on everything that moved.

Conversely, it was before my time, but heck, the first nightclub owned by foreigners in Itaewon 'The Sportsman(?)' was one of the most outright discriminatory of clubs even by Korean standards. Apparently a bouncer or two would stand at the entrance and cull out anyone from entering they didn't think was good looking enough.

My guess is that it is a desperate attempt to be a victim of perceived "racism" that they can then post about on facebook to try and gain some kind of kudos.

I don't know about that. The hottest Korean girls are pretty much always with Korean guys, and I doubt that a change in door policy for these kind of clubs would change that.

Thats not exactly true. I've been with the most attractive Korean women I've ever clapped eyes on. I've also seen foreign guys with absolute 5-star stunners.

Some Korean guys end up with attractive women, some foeign guys end up with attractive women. There is no rule, there is no exception. Not sure why you think this way?

Well of course it's a question of taste... One man's stunner may be distinctively average to another man. And I wasn't questioning your own personal pulling power with my statement, just trying to look at the bigger picture. I've seen Korean men "win" against Foreign men on level playing fields many a time, but I can acknowledge that the reverse happens sometimes too.

Oh sure, of course not. You would never do such a thing. Laughing Gotta luv daves, lol.

Dude if you're absolutely hankering after a hottie, just try talking to one. Word of warning though, they're not usually as awesome as you might think.

I'm not doubting anyone's fanny-magnetism here because I am not exactly beating the girls off with a shitty stick, but I would venture to say most Korean girls are not interested in temporary ESL teachers. For you to pull in a club like that you need to be a handsome chappy, and be so lucky to find a girl curious about foreigners who might also be a bit of a bike. Don't kid yourselves. A lot of girls here are attracted to money and a lot of English teachers aren't going to buy them an ipad so they will put out.

Well the old shove-head-into-crotch routine hasn't been going too well of late, so maybe I'll give it a shot Wink

Let's be honest here, the majority of the "trouble" is in the form of foreign males talking to local females. And it's generally not the females who complain about this, it's the local males. A group of foreign women will almost certainly be let in the door.

As far as harassment, local guys can be very aggressive and overpowering towards the women, the difference is that when a local does it, nobody cares, it's business as usual.

As Korea is obsessed with creating a positive, modern impression to the rest of the world, it's good this racist/discrimination stuff is at least exposed, even if it doesn't change anything.

Anyone who's been refused entry to these types of places simply because of being a foreigner knows how maddening it can be.

Darn, and I had just bought a brand new trench coat to wear to this club...

In the article he mentions foreigners bringing in drugs and weapons. I've heard the few stories about drugs, but has anyone heard of foreigners going around with weapons? That's a new one to me.

You should go to the movies more often.

Really though, even drugs is a stretch. The hardest drug I ever heard about foreigners doing in Korea was weed, and while I realize that all drugs are hard drugs in Korea, everyone I knew would smoke it in their apartment before going out. I've never witnessed or heard of a situation where foreigners were smoking pot in public, outside of the one in Busan more than a decade ago that I've seen discussed here.

How would he know if he had the policy from Day 1? If it was in response to a string of incidents, that would be one thing. But it was from the get-go. No cause for this policy. Weapons? Who the heck is packing in Korea? Unless I've somehow magically managed to miss all the fights where people pulled out bats, chains, and knives from their back pants pocket.

As for Korean men not handling competition. Tons and tons of Korean guys go to clubs where there are lots of foreigners. If they were really that concerned, these places would be devoid of Korean guys, but they aren't. There may be a small minority of dudes who have a problem, but it seems the vast, silent majority doesn't give a flying crap.
