I didn't want to hijack uberscheisse's thread so I started a new one...
I have my ticket (Aug. 6th) and plan on kicking back in Thailand for 2 weeks. My buddy keeps pushing Koh Samui telling me it has the best beaches and is by far the most fun.
I want a place with amazing beaches and upper end accomodations (nice pool, facilities, etc. price isn't important)...any ideas?
Any other islands or locations that I should hit while i'm there (i'll be in Bangkok for a couple days)? |

Been there done that..
I spent a week in Bangkok, a week in Koh Samui, and a week in Phuket a short time ago.
Koh Samui has 2-3 popular beaches. Chaweng Beach is the most developed Beach on the island with Lamai Beach to the south being the quieter, older crowd beach. You'll see hard bodies and alot of skin (topless europeans) on Chaweng Beach. I stayed at Chaweng Beach. You can find beachfront accomodation in all price ranges here. I thought the beach was clean and nice, but it was kind of blocked off by all the hotels. No "boardwalk" style walkway... Lamai Beach seemed like a playground for old fat european men to go cruising for hookers.
Phuket has several beaches also. If you go to Patong Beach you'll be hanging out with sex tourists and Ladyboys. They can get annoying after a while. Karon Beach and Kata Beach were VERY NICE. I loved idling away my time sipping c0cktails on the beach in Karon. The beaches on Phuket are open to the public and have a nice walkway for walking down the beach. It was simply paradise. There's more to do in Phuket and the exquisite Phi-Phi Islands are a short boat ride away. You'll find plenty of upper-end accomodation here.
I recommend the excellent seafood restaurants in Patong.
Another bit of advice on getting down to the southern islands..DON'T take an overnight bus there if you don't have to. Air Asia airlines http://www.airasia.com/general.php?p=pmain&l=en can fly you down there in a couple of hours for decent prices. It beats trying to sleep on a noisy bus for 13 hours.

airasia doesn't fly to koh samui. The closest they go is Phuket.
Check BangkokAir. www.bangkokair.com/ they have some good deals now also, and they do go to Koh Samui.
Krabi's nice - I'm thinking it's getting into the monsoon season on that side right now though. East coast is a better bet. |

I went to Koh Samuii in 1990....I was 19 and ready to party..I wasnt fussy...even then i thought Koh samuii was cheesy and i wished I'd been there 10 years earlier.I hear there is a Burger King there now.
If youve lived in the jungles of Guyana like you claim for three months it probably isnt the place for you..unless...you are looking for a no brainer holiday.
Thailand is still cool and there are loads of beautiful places to see and beautiful beaches to lie on....you just have to get off the path. |

Why would anyone who spends 11 plus months of the year in Korea want to go on vacation in the jungles of South America ?
The guy wants to go on a vacation for 2 weeks to get out of Korea. What's the big deal ? No brainer vacations are fine. It doesn't all have to be death defying adventure.
Where would you suggest he goes, madam ? Bangladesh ? |

Yah, after 8 months of working at a korean company alongside 2000 ajoshi's, the last thing I want is a "cultural experience" on my vacation.
I want a beautiful beach, with great food and lots of things to do (swimming, scuba diving, sightseeing, etc.).
Anything other than a no-brainer holiday right now would be considered an act of self-loathing...i've been inundated with "culture" for far too many months. Its time to relax and smoke that shit right outta me (literally). |

yeah, there's a Burger King, McDonald's, Starbuck's, and a 7-11 there.... Also, the other restaurants and bars are ridiculously commercialized (Reggae Pub).. |

If price is indeed no object, the Central Samui on Chaweng beach is the place to go. Spent a week there in 2000, amazing. Several pools, excellent part of the beach, luxurious rooms.
There's an alley nearby with western restaurants. One is, or was, the Betel Nut, run by a San Franciscan chef. Amazing place--the guy's a bit full of himself, but the food is incredible. |

Yeah, if price really isn't important, I think there are some places over $500 a night, LOL.
Samuii isn't that great, overpriced, crowded, etc. But there are some decent places away from the main beach, of course then you need a scooter to get around.
Ever consider one of the other islands in the area ? Maybe a half day more travel time (but boat rides cab be fun). Way more laid back, better deals, less hassle.
Just my .02, have a nice trip. |

Samui's great. I'm off there too this summer and can't wait. I like Phuket also, but now is not the time to go. I went to Krabi at this time last year and it rained everyday. The east coast islands will be much drier than the west.
Oh.. if you've got a license, rent a car and explore. There are lots fo nice places on the island. Check out ... http://www.samui.org/ ... , I really can't wait! |

11 days is too much for Koh Samui. The first time I went there, I was on the island for over 2 weeks, bored out of my skull.
The island does have its perks, however. Scooters are cheap to rent and there's tons of random crap to do if you look around a wee bit. Chaweng does more or less happen to be where the action is, along with the entire east side of the island. The thing that I don't like about Chaweng, however, is that it's too noisy. Korea drives me nuts because of the noisiness, and Chaweng isn't exactly quiet.
I doubt you'll do this, but do not, for any reason, go to the Korean restaurant on the northern end of Chaweng. It's absolute shit.
If you want to party hardy, Samui's an alright place to do it; however, I recommend diving on Koh Tao, which is a ferry ride away, or going to Koh Phagnan if Samui gets boring. Next time I go to Thailand, I might pop in Samui for a bit of quick Western r&r, but that's about it. |
