As far as I know, this is a windows updates process, and it shows up on my task bar hidden icons as a little globe icon.
Tonight it has been showing up, and if I move the cursor over it it will say in a brown box "Downloading updates: 0%". If I end the process the icon disappears, and then comes back in a few seconds with the process restarted.
It's a touch annoying, as I like to keep everything in check. |

| Window automatic updates. Disable them if you want it to go away. |

isnt there a virus that goes by the same name.
i think wuauclt.exe should only appear in processes at start up.
not sure though, i am computer illiterate. |

It's the first time I saw it in this manner since September.
The icon just sits in the hidden icons bar and says "Downloading updates: 0%".
It does seem suspicious that it doesn't go away, nor seem to actually update anything. My windows isn't registered, and Service Pack 2 hasn't been downloaded yet.
Norton doesn't seem to care, but I was reading on another site when I did a search for the process that if it is the virus Norton won't notice it. |

| Anyone know how to get updates if your windows isn't registered? Service Pack 2 won't download to my computer. |

Not sure about the svc pack 2 problem, if you have a hacked copy it may present difficulty. I've seen this problem before when trying to update clients for wireless and being unable to install svc pack 1 on a hacked copy of winXP. |

Have you updated to SP2? I got this problem too but I haven't updated to SP2 yet. I did get another sp1/IE oriented update despite the 0% tray icon. I suspected it's there because I have yet to update SP2. |

| Have you tried double-clicking on the Windows Update tray icon? I'm not certain, but svc pack 2 may be on approval only (i.e. You have to actually click a radio-button to and an 'Okay' button to accept it.) |

Wow that would probably never occur to a computer user. "Hey there's an icon that won't go away. Maybe I could click on it in various fashions first and see what that does, or maybe I should leave it alone and ask a question on Dave's?"
After your ESL job you should look at being a tech support rep for any number of commercial software companies. You'd have a brilliant career.
My guess is he probably already did that. Let's also add he's probably right clicked, left clicked, rebooted, stopped the process, and toggled off automatic updating... |

Thanks for the brilliant post. I've worked in tech support for about ten years at a university. Most people don't often think to try the obvious, and he didn't say what he'd tried. You're obviously in a great mood.  |

I tried just about everything I knew, such as clicking in various ways, checking out the process, deleting the process, and googling the process name. In fact, I had to actually go beyond staring at the icon to figure out which process it was exactly.
After all that, and the fact that the icon would reappear after deleting the process, and also after restarting the computer, I came here.
I came here because I trust here more than some geeky computer forum that comes up from a google search. It must be the literacy found in people's replies that makes the solutions from here seem more credible.
Sometimes I'm just dumb, though.
Anyway, it seems that it was trying to update, but wouldn't because apparently my Windows is illegal, so I just disabled the auto update, which I didn't initially know how to do.

If your product key isn't in the prohibited range mentioned in that article, try running Windows Update from your programs menu or from Internet Explorer and see what the error message is.
