I had a discussion question in last week's 3rd year class and some of my students told me something I hadn't heard before in Korea. The topic was marrying young and when asked what are the disadvantages of marrying when you are older, more than a few students said that children will be less intelligent. Why? Because a woman doesn't think much when she is older, so her children will be less intelligent than a young person's, who still uses her mind. Apparently this has been proved by Korean doctors. Also did you know that:
*Fan death has been proved
*Kimchi prevents SARS has been proved.

I saw it on KBS News so it must be true. Very Happy

It's nonsense. A mother's eating, drinking and smoking habits can affect the child, but how much she "thinks" during pregnancy does not. If there is a study that suggests otherwise I'd be very interested to see it.

An older mother does have a higher chance of a having a baby with defects, such as Down's Syndrome. Therefore, I suppose if you were to compare the intelligence of babies born to older mothers to babies born to younger mothers, the increased number of mentally disabled children born to older mothers might bring the average down. However, that would be a very short-sighted analysis.

Well then....I guess older women will just have stop having sex then if they can't have smart babies...
hmmm
I guess then the genes of smart babies only come from the male when older women give birth?
Strange...I asked 4 KT's about this and ALL 4 said..it's true! !!
That's why older women in korea don't have babies.
I told them...I can't believe you all are college educated.

People always forget that when you pass through customs here, logic no longer applies.

Apparently, the gestation period of a Korean is ten months. Where does this come from? I thought they counted age from the time of conception, but now it seems they count from a time that, for arguments' sake, may as well be before the parents were ever even in the same room.

Now, how about this one.

I was recently leaving the apartment with my girlfriend and I asked her to turn off the light. She refused. I told her how it was a waste of energy, but she insisted she was saving energy by leaving it on. So, what about all the times she's complained at me leaving the light on?! The difference is the bulb (or whatever you call it where you're from). She insists that everyone is taught at school that fluorescent tube lights take so much energy to light-up that it's more efficient to leave them on, if just for a couple of hours.

Of course they need a surge of energy to light up, but that much? She said I must have slept through that particular class at school, as had her father and brother.

She also says the same when I turn off the car engine if I'm going to be sitting a while at a red light.

Any truth in it?

In fluorescent tubes, yes there is truth. The amount of energy used in starting is euivqalent to about one hour's use. So, if you're out for less than an hour, leave it on. If out for more than an hour, switch it off.

About the car engine, VW produced (still do?) a car that automatically cut the engine after 19 seconds, and re-start was by blipping the throttle. So, I would guess that re-staring a car engine uses energy the equivalent of 20 seconds of idling.

Cymro, the 10 month pregnancy is because they count lunar months, not solar. I think it's a bit more accurate since a woman's menstruation cycle goes by lunar months, not solar.

Wife saw on TV Korean doctors stating how medically size doesn't matter for enjoyment.

All I said to her was look where it is coming from...
