I want to bring a non-English speaking Korean fiance back home to California with me (Maybe) If any of you brought back your Korean girlfriend/boyfriend to live, how did other people treat them? Me? I'm terrified (since it is California) that my boyfriend walking alone will be mugged/beaten up because he's sweet-faced and trusting (and not knowing a whole lot of English will hurt him too). It's just not as safe there as it is here. What stuff did your Korean other have to put up with? What other stresses did they deal with trying to adapt to your culture? Did you find you had to hold their hand the whole time you were there? (well, then again, they do do that for us at times) Again, I know this depends on the type of girlfriend/boyfriend and how well-travelled they are (my man certainly isn't)...any experiences you give would help |

I can't comment on California but I can comment on my experiences with my husband in Melbourne.
He hasn't experienced any "blatant" racism (he's been here about 7 months now) but he has experienced rejection after rejection while seeking employment - he has more than enough quals for the jobs he's applying for, but was only getting one bite out of about 20 applications and even then, once they heard his accent or met him in person, they didn't even send a "thanks but no thanks" letter/email/phone call.
He did study English for a few months (maybe 3?) when he first arrived and met some Korean people - I'd so advise that your fiance makes friends within the Korean community nearest him - it will really help when the homesickness hits.
Anyway, my husband is now working for a Korean company in Melbourne and loving it. He gets to speak Korean every day and eat Korean food etc...
I found that when I held his hand, things didn't happen, but when he went out searching on his own, using the few connections he had here, things worked out for him... but I do almost everything for us - like connecting services, paying for bills etc... but it's easy for me... as it was for him when we were living in Korea. |

I think a lot of it will depend on what area of Cali you're going back to as far as how accepting the "natives" are. That state is so diverse....seems to vary from some total rednecked hillbilly backwaters to amongst the most multicultural regions in the world.
As far as the violence / mugging thing there a handful of common sense rules that you can teach him that would keep the potential for that to a total minimum. |

| My Korean girlfriend and I both live in New York City. She experiences no racism that I can tell. Actually, I get more of it than she does because we go to Korean stores and restaurants a lot and I get shafted if she's not there or if I don't speak any Korean to them. |

he can't be that much of a wimp, surely-or you wouldn't be with him. tell him to remember his taekwondo.
Ask him for lessons on what to say from esl teachers here who have to put up with a train full of stares and abuse for having Korean girlfriends. |

| There seems to be a mini-trend of strong foreign women marrying homegrown mama's boys. |

Where in California?
The Asian communities in California are HUGE.. I dont see any problems at all. Plus the intermarriage rates between asians and others is extremely high as well in California. I don't see any problem whatsoever.
Muggings/beaten up for being sweet-faced? In California? Seems unheard of.. potentially on the East Coast.. but on the West Coast? No fricking way.. |

Going home with you is a death warrant. He will be hog-tied and dragged from the back of a pick-up, no doubt.
Seriously..... |
