A Korean teacher asked me for textbook examples of sexist remarks. He suggested "Can you smoke?" I suggested "Nice sweater." I'm not sure if it's my soju hangover or me being a guy, but I'm drawing a blank here.

how is "can you smoke" sexist?

something sexist would be like this:
woman don't belong in the workplace, they should be at home making babies.
OR
nice boobs.

I don't know, he's Korean and old. Traditionally, Korean women don't smoke in public.

How about something along the lines of: Women should be kindergarten teachers and men should be engineers. While we men discuss this, why don't you go make us some coffee?

OK..

She is a judge... she is a woman!

Wow.. it's a woman taxi driver!

Women should not drive...

Women are only good for making babies...

These are the ones I can think of now.. if I think more, I will let you know.

He wants remarks one would make to a woman rather than about women in general. I told him such remarks don't exist in English as we've all been trained to avoid them but he didn't buy it.

I can see how "Do you smoke?" could be a bit risque in a Korean context, yes.

Others that come to mind:

-Girls aren't good at math or science
-Boys arent' good with languages ( sexism goes both ways)
-Why would you want to work after being married?- you should stay home and look after the babies.

Interesting that this question would come up. I just had a flashback to 1983 in one of my classes. The textbook said "My father is a nurse." When my Grade 6 students read that, they all cracked up laughing and made a few comments about it being "women's work"

No. Firemen and doctors were mostly male for long time and its still a male dominated industry. Just by probability alone, the firefighters and doctors being refered to are dudes. I do not find it sexist when one makes an assumption based on facts.

Questions like:

Why aren't you wearing make-up?
Why aren't you married yet?
Are you going to continue working after you get married?
Doesn't your husband make enough money that you can stop working?
What does your husband [or parents] think about [your smoking]?
Are you sure you should eat that piece of chocolate cake?

Suggestions like:

Would your husband like to [play poker] with me and my friends?
Maybe you'd like to [go shopping] with my wife.

It all depends on context I guess.
