It's all dutch to me, don't need a full translation, just a general idea of what the characters visible might mean.
It's a detail from a photo someone wants to use and he's frightened it's going to say "Yankee go home" or something.

It was written on the umm, hull (? the inside metal wall of the boat) of the New Star ferry that goes from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon bay |

| OK.. it has something to do with the rope (the last word on the right is rope) and the pillar (four from right) ... and that's all I know for now. I will ask my sister, who is much better at reading Chinese than me, to tell me exactly what it means. |

OK I asked my sister, she doesn't really know either because it's old style Chinese (may be 100 years old??). Anyway, she confirmed that it has something to do with the rope and the pillar though.
For what it's worth.. this is what *Yankees go home* in Chinese...

Why are you paranoid about stenciled characters on the Star Ferry? Naturally they're just instructions or warnings about the boats or the dock or the doors or whatever.
PS: Tzechuk... those "old style" characters are still used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and in Chinatowns around the world! |

To be honest I wasn't concerned, but he's using the full image as the cover art for a single and didn't want to find out after paying printing costs that he was the equivalent of one of those guys that get a tattoo which means "Stupid ugly foreigner".
This is the full image btw.

I know, Joe.. I am Chinese.. born in Hong Kong, no less.
When I say *old style*, I didn't mean the characters themselves... I mean the way it is written. Bit like old English.. pray tell me blah blah, meaning, *please* tell me... |

Speaking of "can anyone read Chinese?"...
What's this I hear about them developing a phonetic Chinese alphabet? Something to do with them wanting to host the Olympics in the future or something? Is it true that they're going to do that? If so, sign me up for Chinese lessons. |
