If it were solely on music I'd go with Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but since Opera implies a visual as well as an auditory experience it's got to be The Wall. |

Quadrophenia is better than Tommy which is better than everything else on this list. The Wall is way overrated. |

Can you see the real me? Can you? Can you?!
I was thinking about the narrative, the animation, the symbolism, the bombast, you can call it being overrated, but I think every opera needs a touch of bombast, and The Wall has it in spades.
Still, being the former owner of 2 Lambrettas I can definitely see your point. |

I voted Tommy, but it could just as easily have been the only other choice, Quadrophenia.
Where's the option for Lifehouse? (Yes, I know) |

I voted The Wall. It is so mind blowing! But I would also put both Tommy and JC Superstar as close second. |

Actually, I thought I had included an option which said "Other (N.B.- Les Mis, The Wiz, and Cats are NOT rock operas)" but I guess it got left off in editing |

And what constitutes a "rock opera?" Does it have to have guitar rock or just modern style music that is not traditional Broadway or classical opera? And is there a distinction between "rock opera" and "rock musical?" I personally would consider "Grease" and "Rocky Horror Show" rock musicals, not operas. What about "Rent" and "Godspell?"
Anyway, turn off nerd mode.
I still keep going back to JC Superstar for the music itself. "Rent" has gotten old. And I have found going to RHPS a little dull in my late years. |

Quadrophenia is cool. But the best one has to be '200 motels' by the late great Frank Zappa. |

Yeah it's a bit of a stickler and as Eamo has pointed out there isn't much 'Opera' in Quadrophenia. What makes it rock? 4/4 time, electric guitars? What makes it 'Opera'? A connecting arrative, certainly- but must the narrative always be sung?
I was thinking of the Wikipedia entry when I made the thread, and (just like the 'other' category for the poll for Hedgewick etc.) I thought I had included it but it must have gotten left off in editing:

Oooh yeah! Quadrophenia! Rockers and the mods! Good stuff.
Jesus Christ Superstar is definitely my 2nd choice though and funnily enough I'm not at all religious. It's just good music. |

Love the lamb lies down on broadway but why do you consider it a rock opera. Its only got one character doing the singing. I would consider it a concept album over anything else.
maybe that could be a new poll, best concept album of all time. |
