Toronto, Athens, and now Venezuela. All in the span of two weeks. These aren't small planes either. They've each carried hundreds of people.

I don't have any theories to offer, but I do find it strange and unsettling that all these planes are dropping.

terrorists.

just kidding. Wink

tragic scenario on that greece crash...looks like they froze to death when the plane lost pressure. All sympathies to the bereaved.

Things always happen in 3's. Reminds me of the plane crash in rockaway just days after 9/11.

Me too! I'm flying next week. And as luck would have it, it looks like KAL, for the first time in recorded trans-Pacific transportation, has the cheapest flight over. That is not a recipe for secure feelings. I lost confidence in them when one of their planes crashed into the side of a mountain on Guam. (If you've been to Guam you know 'mountain' is a gross exaggeration.) The co-pilot, who could tell they were headed for trouble, couldn't tell his senior to pull up. Shocked

I was thinking the same thing ... what is going on. This happened a couple of years ago too...

That is a very good reason not to fly this airline, dude. Social hierarchy is more important than the passengers' lives?

I forgot about Toronto. Now I can breath a sigh of relief. For some reason that clearly escapes logic, the plane crash thing seems to usually happen in threes. I know, superstious stuff and all, but I was thinking about that today, having forgotten about Toronto, and was getting nervous about my three impending flights between now and next Tuesday. many people have escaped such disasters through listening to gut instinct or even premonitions.
Pay attention to that still small voice within. If you are religious, pray first.
my Grandfather did. He says he heard a small voice telling him not to board a train once, while with my grandmother- so he held back. It crashed with the loss of 70+ passengers 20 minutes later.

Yes, I know. I've done the financial calculus: There is a $350 difference in price. I figure 15 hours @ $350 = $23.33 per hour of anxiety. Is it worth it? The emotional calculus isn't finished yet.

The last time I flew KAL was when I bought a ticket on Northwest Airlines (cheapest available that day) and then I got pushed onto a KAL plane and told that they had a "sister airlines" agreement or something. I would have paid more for another plane if I had ever been told such a thing, so you know what? The next 5 times I had to fly I avoided both.

The stewardess uniforms on Singapore are damn cute, by the way. There's a personal TV built-in to the back of the seat in front of you that not only shows movies but has a gameboy computer game fuinction - I'm a Tetris fan from way back, so sue me. A lot of the other passengers on the Pacific run are ending up in India, so be sure to request the vegetarian meal because that means you get curry, turns out its one food that survives the rigors of reheating and storage on planes extremely well.

I had already done your emotional calculus and decided a little extra money to fly on a plane I wanted to be on was worth it.

The plane in Toronto did not exactly crash... Laughing

It actually landed on the runway...just too far on it to stop in time. Also, the weather was pretty bad that day.

You cannot compare it to the other two crashes really.

As far as airline safety...it is better not to read to much into it or to be anxious about something that you have no control over. If the plane crashes...you will be able to do nothing about it right?

If it stresses you too much buy a ticket on a sea going liner or a cargo ship..ahooooyyyyy matey. Laughing Laughing Laughing

As for airline choices...we fly to Canada once per year and we always use KAL, JAL or Northwest.

We avoid Air Canacrap like the plague even if they have never lost a plane. The service sucks too much on Air crap. If I'm going down, I would prefer to do so while being served well and with a minimum of courtesy.... Laughing Laughing Laughing

And my family always used to tell me that the SAFEST time to fly is after one plane crashes -- they said that it would mean airports and the people that check the planes are being much much more careful after a crash because they are thinking more carefully, or something like that. That after one plane crashes, there won't be another one for a long time......

I guess there goes THAT silly theory down the drain.

Thanks Dad.

There isn't a human alive that doesn't have a "premonition" about disaster before boarding a plane. When the plane lands safely, we promptly forget such premonitions. In the rare case the plane crashes and we did not board because of a premonition (usually coupled with some coincidence like missing your flight), then we suddenly remember this premonition.

Drag yourself into the light of rational belief.

Conventional wisdom too is don't buy a car that was made on Monday. This goes doubly so for a car made on a Tuesday after a long summer weekend.
