i think its reasonable to assume that wrong actions have bad consequences, and bad behavior, having adverse effects on others, should be deterred by punishment.
If your child continually vandalised your house despite all your warnings to him not to, would you punish him? By doing so, would you incurr his respect or his hatred?
If your child keeps playing with the electricity outlet, would you take effective measures to stop him, for his own good?
This is how I see Love- actions in the other persons best interest. The relationship of god to man. Doesn't make sense to us at the time, but later, maybe. |

Yes, I would punish my child if he continually did unsafe things. I'd do it so he could learn not to do em anymore.
I wouldn't subject him to eternal torture with no hope of redemption, tho.
That's the difference. |

What about Adolf hitler? or Idi Amin? men who consciously made the decisions to murder millions of innocent people?Serial killers, Pol pot, Kim jong il etc etc. Would you let them off?
no. they made a choice: and they pay a price.
Thats the way life is. You make choices. You benefit from wise choices, you pay for bad ones.
if you want to become a citizen of the U.S., you have to swear an oath to abide by the laws and constitution of the country. No matter if you're an otherwise good person or not, if you refuse to do this, you are barred entry to America. Thats how it is with heaven. You make a simple choice, or face eternal rejection from that kingdom.

What if, your child disowned you: and denied that you were his father. What if he turned on you and betrayed you, refused to follow your guidance, was embarrassed to admit to his friends that you were his father. What if he told everyone that you were an idiot, and falsified claims against you that resulted in your death penalty. Then he went on to kill his brothers and sisters.
Would you still leave him your inheritance?...No: you would say: don't ever darken my doorstep again, live the rest of your life your life without me.
-That is the situation... of God, and man. |

I agree! I'd also go drown a few thousand strangers because they lived in the same state. That'll teach my son a thing or two about sticking his fingers in the fan while it's running!
Has anyone else notice that god is a single father? And that he had a son out of wedlock, while committing adultery at that?
That alone should see us all die because the moon fell on Seattle, thanks to his wrath at himself. |

If those guys accepted Chirst as their savior the second before they died, they'd be in the clear.
It's not what you do. It's what you believe.
So much for that...
"God's wrath" is not meant to be educational. It's just revenge.
Not for what you do, but for what you believe. |

So those priests, they were giving those altar boys and orphans God's Love?
If I ever get sent to prison (knock on wood) I hope no one tries to give me God's Love if I drop the soap in the shower. |

There's consequences for bad actions, and there's an eternity of hot fiery damnantion.....heaven and hell just seem so extreme to me...and (insert deity here)help us if we've picked the wrong religion...
don't know much about this stuff, just don't like being told if i don't conform to a very specific set of do's and don'ts i'll spend forever taking hot pokers up the jacksy (sideways at that...) |

But we all know there aren't. Everyone has stolen a piece of candy and didn't get caught. Told a lie and got away with it. Cheated on a test.
One aspect of religion is to insert a moral order into a universe that doesn't have one. |

Good point.
No direct consequences to specific actions.
But if you're talking about general badness happening to you at a later date because something did before, well that's more akin to karma isn't it, and you're getting away from Christian beliefs.
So, maybe you need to switch religions, 5 Eagles. |

It amazes me how sadistic some christians seem to be with their neo-Platonic views of Hell and all. I personally don't think it's a good idea to compare say God and people to a "father" and a child. We are not children. Why not the image of two adults communicating with one another~ two friends. Just a thought.
I like what Woody Allen once expressed in one of his movies via Max Von Sidow"
If Jesus came back today and saw what was being done in his name, I don't think he could stop throwing up!
