says america has the highest percentage of very proud citizens. and japan the highest percentage of citizens who are not proud. and yet japan comes in number 15 on the proud ranking. that pretty much fits in with what i've experienced with japanese people. big love-hate relationship with their own japanese-ness.

btw, do you guys trust this nationmaster site? some of their stats seem kinda wacky.

I agree, Konglish would be much more appropriate.

My impression is...

Japan and Germany had the most who think the LEAST of their country in terms of pride because they lost the Second World War and still learn shame in school about it. There are tensions in these two tradionally very proud nations.

Switzerland is up there because it's a neutral country in many ways and nationalistic pride is usually tied up with allusions of superiority and with warlike sentiments.

Belgium and the Netherlands don't surprise me at all, the former because of their self-depricating humour, the latter because of the essentially inclusive, tolerant, multiethnic identity.

Not sure.. so many American teachers I work with are sheepish about their country. Bush might have knocked the country down a few proud points.

People always tell me that Indians are extremely proud of their country.

Most murders: Columbia.
Least willing to fight for country: Japan (23%)
Most cannabis use: NZ (23%) Cool
Percentage who wouldn't want to live next door to gays: Japan (69%), Netherlands (11%)
Most educated: Norway
Most trigger happy: South Africa

The Swiss are an annoying nationality.. with obnoxious pride. Funny with all the gold coming in from the Jewish during the Holocaust they are most infamous for NOT letting in the Jewish people IN during the Holocaust! They closed the borders! 20,000 Jews were denied entrance well-after they KNEW they'd go into concentration camps. Turned away at the border.

Of course I'm sure their gold was well-accepted beforehand however. Sometimes you have to remind the Swiss that, particularly when they get on their soapboxes how great they are for never being involved in any war or conflict or anything else.

I'm not defending the Swiss, but just to play devil's advocate.. many, many countries refused Jewish refugees. Have a look at Abella's None is Too Many someday about the Canadian government's refusal to accept Jews fleeing the Nazis. Unfortunately, numerous countries had similar prejudices during World War II.

Yeah, because a lot of countries on the European continent were doing really well against the Nazis in the 1930's. They could have attacked the Germans with cuckoo clocks.

Having lived in quite a few countries i can undoubtedly say that Korea is the MOST nationalistic country I have ever been in. The reason for this is that although there are patriotic SOB's everywhere, Korea lacks the dissent and the self-deprication and self criticism that most other countries have. ....there ain't no Daily Show in South Korea. They may disagree on politics a bit, but as far as the nation, the food, the people, the history goes...it's untouchable.

Switzerland also traded with South Africa all of the way through the apartheid era- a Swiss friend told me that they regarded ANC as terrorists during the 80s.

Nationmaster has some very strange stats
e.g. Lithuania has the highest per capita mortality rate for Acne.
