[Ya-ta Boy]

When you live in a country with next to nil TV to kill time, you end up with an amazing amount of extra time in the day. It's wonderful. There is life without the tube!

On top of that, I live way the heck out in the boonies. Six cars around here and we have 'heavy traffic'. I know it's hard to believe in Korea, but it's true. Power walking around the pond is the big teen age thing on Friday nights.

So I came equipped with hobbies.

I have the complete 7 volume Francis Parkman history of the French in Canada, with all the grusome details of Iroquois biting off fingernails of torture victims before they get down to serious business. About 3,000 pages.

I love cooking. This weekend has been declared Cajun weekend. On the menu is Red Beans and Rice with (home-made) Andouille Sausage. I'd make Cajun Lasagna but haven't found any lasagna noodles yet. Anyone in the Pusan area know where I can find any? Masan Wal Mart used to carry them, but they let me down this time. I take it as a challenge to create a decent 'exotic' meal while living in a country where salt, black pepper and cinnamon are the only other flavors outside of ko-choo. I love gingerbread in the winter. Years ago I figured out how to make my own molasses. Tomorrow morning I'm using molasses in home-made (sour) apple bread. If it fails I'll toss it in the mosquito-breeding pond behind the apt complex. It should either kill 'em off or produce genetically enhanced killer mosquitoes.

I came equipped with all the stuff for water painting. I have an excess of thumbs and next to no talent, but what the heck? This area has a wonderful variety of wild flowers and some pretty decent looking mountains. My little burg and the area around it has a rainbow bridge and a bunch of traditional homes and farm buildings. Lots of inspiration and models. Low on skill, but who will ever know?

I won't mention the historical novel that no one will ever see or the shadow puppets on the wall.

I have a scooter for touring all the little country roads that lead somewhere. Last weekend I found the end of the road in a little burg with 10 houses. If the weather cooperates tomorrow or Sunday I'll see if I can find where the road begins.

I had hoped to sign up at a health club, but the one in my little village doesn't have any showers or much of anything else. One tread mill. A couple of weight thingies. And so far, no manager person who is willing to appear when one of the two way-gook sarams in town shows up. Yoga seems out of the question. There is a do-jang (or whatever they are called). I suppose I could learn to break bricks over students heads.

Just wondering. What hobbies have other people found to fill their time?

Hmmm...13 people at home on a Friday night and nothing to add in the first 10 minutes of the post. I think we can do better than that, folks. You just aren't trying.

Won't be here for long Ya ta but...

I am taking up Model building. For real its interesting, and I can decorate my apartment with my hybrid models of half German Panzers, and Spitfires. HEeee heehehe

I read way to much, but thats a good thing.

I have taken up walking for the sake of walking. Surprising how easy it is on the knees with these Korean sidewalks. They have alot of give in them with that spongey chip crap they use to make them with.

I also work on a couple sites to promote awareness about Institutional Abuse.

I used to go running everyday after work...that killed about an hour. Other times, I would just go wandering around the city, just bring my camera and see where I ended up. A few times, I just took a bus for the sake of cruising and got out when I found something interesting.

Oh yeah, I lived about an hour from Seoul, so I would take the bus there on a Saturday and try to hit every place listed in the Lonely Planet. I almost did it...

Archery sounds cool and I could practice here at home in my livingroom (it's one long room with the kitchen).

Changi or Jangi is Korean chess (inspired from Chinese chess).

I play it every sunday afternoon in the park near my house with the old Korean dudes there. Been doing so for a few years now.

I find it quite enjoyable, a fascinating game and a great chance to practice my Korean.

All in all, it has brought me nothing but good.
