Global competitiveness rises
GENEVA - South Korea's global competitiveness jumped 12 notches over the past year to 17th place, the biggest rise among 117 countries surveyed, a report showed Wednesday.
In the Global Competitiveness Report 2005-2006, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said South Korea's economy is on a recovery track despite the strength of its currency, and its efforts to develop scientific technologies and root out corruption are noteworthy.
The WEF is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world.
South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy, grew 4.6% last year as exports remained robust, offsetting a slowdown in private spending. The economy, which expanded 3% in the first six months of the year on an annual basis, is expected to grow 4% for the full year.

4.6%? Now I can tell my students to stop whining about a bad economy and job market. |

The problem in Korea (in my humble opinion) is not that Korea has a bad economy as such, its that 1) they have gone from a society that saves to one that is based on credit cards and eventually those chickens will come home to roost 2) the gov. wants free trade with countries but doesn't want to let imports in, they only want to export
If two problems were addressed I think that Korea would be something really spectacular |

It's also a problem of perspective: the economy grew at 8 to 12 percent for three decades. Three percent is a recession to them. And you are correct, adjusting their spending to fit the reality of a matured economy isn't happening. Getting worse, actually.
I used to think that Korea seemed to always take in the worst of Western culture/society/politics/whatever and ignore the best of it. If anything, I believe even more strongly now. Divorce rate at 47%, kids prostituting themselves for money to buy clothes (copying the Japanese), etc., etc. |

This is the first time I've seen someone roll their eyes on this board in response for someone asking for a link/evidence. |

If you had said "issue" or "problem" you would not have received the rolling eyes as it would have implied that you simply wanted background info. Since you chose to imply I had been untruthful, I chose to take offense. Go look it up. Or just ask onyone who has been here a year or more. |

Man, you're obnoxious. I'm not sure if you were too lazy to notice that TUM and I are different posters or if you're claiming one of us is a sock. I've been here more than a year, and I wanna see some numbers. Sure, it happens. But how frequently? |

I said "claim" as you did not provide any proof. And I don't imply. Had I wanted to convey the impression that you were being less than forthright I would have come out and said so.
Glad to see you are making new friends right and left though. It lessens the number of people willing to take you seriously. |

Actually, you're right, I didn't notice it was a different poster, but the response would have been the same given that it was Urban. His use of the word was not accidental. Obnoxious?? I didn't state a claim, I stated a fact. The use of that word was incorrect, or meant to be rude. Actually, in that context, it is rude either way becuase, Why would I lie about that? Call me a liar, expect a slap upside the head. Unfortunately, you got the slap intended for someone else. I do apologize.
If you want numbers, however, you'll have to go find them as it's of no interest to me in and of itself. I was using it in a broad context only. |

Stating a fact cannot be construed as claim. Thus, no matter how you slice it, you knew you were questioning the veracity of the statement. Unles you don;t understand the meaningof the word? That you are ignorant of the situation is on you, not me. If you wanted to simply ask for the info, you could have. You could have asked where you could find info on that. You could have said you hadn't heard that and would like more info. You didn't. You said it was my claim. It is not. Thus, if anyone was lazy or rude, it was you. |

A survey in 2001 showed that two out of 100 middle and high school students had experienced the sex industry and 71 percent of girl students were reported to have been exposed to prostitution such as with a "Wonjo kyoje." The statistics of "Wonjo kyoje" criminals in 2000 revealed that 48.5 percent of them were in their thirties, 29.3 percent in their twenties, 14.1 percent in their forties, followed by 7.1 percent in their teens. As many as 34.5 percent of girl students who had had an experience with a "Wonjo kyoje" were 17 years old, second and third year high school students, followed by 25.9 percent 18 years old, and 13.8 percent, 15 years old and 16.1 percent under 14 years old.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children
According to the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, child sex accounted for about 10% of the sexual services business in 1999. In the past, child prostitution was limited to urban areas. However, there has been a gradual spread of the industry to farming and fishing communities. This is often manifested in illegal coffee shops and/or karaoke bars... Responses indicate that child prostitution is becoming normalised throughout South Korean society. Karaoke bars, "ticket" teahouses (where children are found to provide sex), massage houses, restaurants, video-viewing rooms, night clubs, brothels are locations where child prostitution exists.

Sex business lives on despite crackdown
Ms. Y explained that most working girls lived and worked in their rooms, with a day off once a week. They came into the trade for all kinds of reasons - from supporting family members back home, paying off personal debts, accumulating capital to start their own businesses, or just to make a lot more money than they could otherwise elsewhere.

Sex Life Active, Sex Trade Thriving in Korea
From the ubiquitous barber pole to the basement coffee shops, prostitution is a higher chunk of the GDP than agriculture. According to a report released by the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), the nation's sex trade was estimated at 24 trillion won (US$ 20.4 billion) last year, accounting for 4.1 percent of 578 trillion won, the total GDP.... The average female salary worker can expect to earn substantially less then their male equivalent. Handbags and nose jobs don't just pay for themselves.... Countless students, secretaries and housewives work as 'entertainers' in these venues, singing, pouring drinks and sucking cock.

What exacrtly does "exposed to prositution" mean in this context? Does it include walking by a brothel on the way to school?
And I notice that the article does not say "exposed to prostitution with a Wonjo kyoje", but "such as with a "Wonjo kyoje". Consider the following statement:
"70% of Canadians have been exposed to illegal drugs such as heroin".
Now, this could mean that 70% of Canadians have had some sort of exposure to illegal drugs(which could include smelling marijuana from their neighbours apartment), and that heroin is an example of an illegal drug. But I don't think a statement like that is very helpful in telling us anything about Canadians' drug usage.
I'm not saying underage prostitution isn't a big problem in Korea, just that the quote provided didn't seem very useful in explicating the problem. |

I'm pretty sure exposed as used here means participated in. But, yes, typically poorly written. |
