In anthropology class, I learned that the people in some cultures don't know that sex causes pregnancy.

The reason they don't know that is that they don't have a control group.

No irony there. She's in the US. Haven't you heard what Dubya's been doing with federal funding?

What do you mean by "pregnancy center"? Like a fertility clinic, prenatal clinic, or anti-abortion pro-life center?

Seriously. Inquiring minds want to know.

It's actually called the Pregnancy Counseling and Information Center and basically we give out free pregnancy tests and then counsel with the ladies about the results. We give objective information about all of their options, including abortion, adoption, parenting, etc,. and then help them work through their decision. We are a pro-life organization, but we don't make any decisions for the girls and we're not pushy. Other than that we get a lot of donations and we give away free baby clothes, strollers, cribs, baby supplies, that kind of thing. Sometimes girls will have an abortion and come in for counseling afterwards because it can be quite traumatic. I guess we do a variety of things. Hope that satisfies your curiosity.

Oh. believe me, I am from the U.S. and am well aware of what you are talking about. I know how objective the information on pregnancy is that is given by pro-life groups, and I know all about you type of organization.

"Crisis Pregnancy Centers" have been known to advertise in places people look when they are seeking an abortion, and they offer "abortion counceling"- then they pull the old bait and switch, and show the already traumatized young woman graphic illustrations of bloody fetuses, etc. and given a heavlily guilt ridden right to life speel.

New York state probes pro-life centers: Case ultimately could lead to shutdown of crisis pregnancy movement

Quote:
By Art Moore, WorldNetDaily.com, January 15, 2002

An investigation of crisis pregnancy centers by New York state's top law officer could lead to the demise of the nationwide movement, according to anti-abortion activists.

Earlier this month, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer issued subpoenas to three New York City-area centers, which are among the 3,000 non-profit, mostly Christian-based groups that help pregnant women find alternatives to abortion.

WorldNetDaily acquired a copy of a subpoena served to the Cross Road Foundation of Staten Island that states that the Attorney General believes the group has violated state law by "misrepresenting the services they provide" and "diagnosing and advising persons on medical options" without a license.

I have no objection to free speech, or even to the arguments of the pro-lifers. It it manipulation and deceit, especially by religious people, that I find objectionable here.

Does your group help the mothers who are poor and swayed by your arguments educate and feed their children for life? Now that to me is pro-life.

Are you actually trained to "counsel" these women? If you are actually "directing" a pregnancy center, I would hope that you have both some counceling and some medical training of the professional and not just religious sort, as well as a healthy dose of life experience.

You've just flamed someone who is the director of a counseling organization. On what basis do you claim to know how objective her methodology and motivation is-- simply because you're from the US?

Maybe it is a little direct, but this is not a trivial issue. I don't know, but I am asking about training, methodology and motivation. If she has training, in counseling or medicine, fine, if not, well there are some problems. In the end this is her business, of course, but there are a lot of ethical questions about these groups in the States.

I think I have been around here long enough that you know that I don't just go around flaming people. My questions are serious and earnest.

I suppose that I should have left out that I know about her sort of organization- perhaps that was jumping the gun a bit. But right to life pregnancy counseling centers in the U.S. are a very troublesome issue, and I, perhaps wrongly, assumed that this was they type of organization she is directing.

This is certainly worthy of discussion. By the way, read my post and you will see that I speak only of this type of organization, and have made no negative comments about pollyplummer.

If she makes no response, I will certainly not belabor the issue. If she believes strongly in what she is doing and wishes to explain the process, training and ethics, that would be good too, and perhaps enlightening. I easily stand corrected when I am wrong.
