Immigration Canada wants to deport a Korean family. The father is dying and is millions of dollars in debt in South Korea. Gangsters have threatened to sell his daughters into prostitution to settle the debt. Immigration Canada won't let them stay after the father's dies, as they say they daughers can be protected from the gangsters by the Korean Police.

How they are any safer in Canada eludes me, especially considering that their location has been splashed across the front pages. As touching as their plight may be, this hardly warrants national news coverage. It is the responsibility of the Korean government to protect her citizens from her criminals, not Canada's. It is not like they are being sent to Burma.

After being beat over the head innumerable times being told Canada is a multicultural paradise with no capital punishment and all the other benefits of a civilized country, I have to say I am shocked. Shocked I say. Has the government no compassion? No mercy? No compunction about sending young women into prostitution?

Arguing from analogy, the Canadian government has no moral right to exist. It should throw itself in abject submission before the world court of public opinion and beg for forgiveness.

I am appalled. Appalled I say. Wouldn't it be more efficient just to throw these young virgins to the drooling wolves of the neighborhood than to ship them back here? How can you Canadians hold your heads up in an international forum is beyond me. I'm disgusted.

At least the Chinese are up-front enough to charge the family for the bullet to shoot someone in the back of the head. You guys are not even willing to front the cost of a condom for these innocent girls.

Christ-on-a-crutch, you guys should be tossed off the continent for your hypocrisy.

Anybody who wants to write a letter that could maybe, possibly help them out can do so here --

And as Amnesty Int'l. always reminds us, politeness is key. Rudeness gets you ignored.

While I have no great love for the Canadian government, anyone who equates the Canadian government with ALL Canadians ought to be tossed off the continent for their appalling stupidity.

Can you imagine the legal precedent it would set if they were allowed to stay in Canada on the grounds that they ripped off the mob?

Let's substitute the words "Korean" and "Korea" for "American" and "United States", or maybe "Australian" and "Australia". Does arguing against deportation make any more sense now?

Most Koreans would probably welcome the decision as Canada is showing trust in the Korean government. Besides, Koreans have little sympathy for people who flee the country so they don't have to pay their debts.

It's a sad story. Presumably they applied for refugee status based claiming fear of retaliation by Korean gangsters they were indebted to. It certainly can't be a persecution by the Korean state claim.
Indebted to thugs is not a good enough reason to get refugee status in most G8 countries. Granting them RS based on that means anyone who's messed up their lives and has the local thugs after them can claim it. There's a door you don't want to open!
RS is granted for things like political persecution back home.
Obviously they can't immigrate as a family the usual way--bringing needed skills or investing $ in Canada.
Monsieur may have also initially lied about his criminal record.

Thought of the day: if the situation were reversed and a Canadian family was running from being indebted to the Hell's Angels etc etc, would the Korean gov't grant them RS?

Why does this all sound like the French bragging about multiculturalism? Where did that get them?
