on hunting trip...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20060212/ca_pr_on_wo/cheney_hunting_accident
I guess it's not really breaking news but...
AND I'm happy to see that they quickly managed to put the blame squarely on someone else's shoulders before it was too late...
and the guy ain't NEAR dead so that's good.

You don't do much bird hunting do you? Getting rained on by birdshot is not uncommon.

Quail are a pain though because they take off low and stay low, which is probably the only reason Cheney hit his hunting partner. I doubt Cheney would have hit the guy if they were hunting woodcock, grouse or dove..

Razz

The guy should have paid up on his contracts with haliburton!

Or Iraqis. Or Taliban. Or Viet Cong...

Cause you gotta enlist and travel to shoot at quarry like that, and Cheney and his chickenhawk boss aren't the type.

Maybe he mistook the guy for a Democrat.

If any terrorists thought their world would get easier if they got rid of Bushie, then they are obviously in for a rude awakening.

If this is what Cheney does to his campaign contributors, then imagine what he would do to terrorists! Laughing

Time online edition wrote:
If Cheney now finds himself criticized or lampooned, he'll ironically be in the same position he himself put Senator John Kerry in during the final days of the 2004 Presidential campaign, though the circumstances then did not involve a potentially deadly accident.

At the time, Cheney used his widely-known experience as a hunter to mock a duck-hunting foray in Ohio in which Senator John Kerry ended up shooting a goose.
"The senator who gets a grade of 'F' from the National Rifle Association went hunting this morning," Cheney reportedly said, to hoots.
"I understand he bought a new camouflage jacket for the occasion, which did make me wonder how regularly he does go goose hunting.

Karma?

Well, the whole Elmer Fudd thing he's got going on is certainly unfortunate right now. And who wouldn't want to be a late-night TV monologue writer? The jokes damn near write themselves.

Cheney Cited for Breaking Hunting Law
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney has been given a warning citation for breaking Texas hunting law by failing to buy a $7 stamp allowing him to shoot upland game birds.

TV Comedians Target Cheney Accident
LOS ANGELES - Television talk shows took aim Monday at Vice President Dick Cheney's "accidental" weekend shooting in Texas of a hunting companion.

Here are a few of the jokes.
___

"Late Show with David Letterman," CBS:

• "Good news, ladies and gentlemen, we have finally located weapons of mass destruction:
It's Dick Cheney."

• "But here is the sad part — before the trip Donald Rumsfeld had denied the guy's request for body armor."

"We can't get Bin Laden, but we nailed a 78-year-old attorney."

• "The guy who got gunned down, he is a Republican lawyer and a big Republican donor and fortunately the buck shot was deflected by wads of laundered cash. So he's fine. He took a little in the wallet."
__

"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," NBC:

• "Although it is beautiful here in California, the weather back East has been atrocious. There was so much snow in Washington, D.C., Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fat guy thinking it was a polar bear.

• "That's the big story over the weekend. ... Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter, a 78-year-old lawyer. In fact, when people found out he shot a lawyer, his popularity is now at 92 percent." Laughing

• "I think Cheney is starting to lose it. After he shot the guy he screamed, 'Anyone else want to call domestic wire tapping illegal?'"

• "Dick Cheney is capitalizing on this for Valentine's Day.
It's the new Dick Cheney cologne. It's called Duck!"

___

"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," Comedy Central:

• "Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a man during a quail hunt ... making 78-year-old Harry Whittington the first person shot by a sitting veep since Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton, of course, (was) shot in a duel with Aaron Burr over issues of honor, integrity and political maneuvering. Whittington? Mistaken for a bird."

• "Now, this story certainly has its humorous aspects. ... But it also raises a serious issue, one which I feel very strongly about. ... moms, dads, if you're watching right now, I can't emphasize this enough: Do not let your kids go on hunting trips with the vice president. I don't care what kind of lucrative contracts they're trying to land, or energy regulations they're trying to get lifted — it's just not worth it."

___

"Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," CBS:

• "He is a lawyer and he got shot in the face. But he's a lawyer, he can use his other face. He'll be all right." Cool

• "You can understand why this lawyer fellow let his guard down, because if you're out hunting with a politician, you think, 'If I'm going to get it, it's going to be in the back.' "

• "The big scandal apparently is that they didn't release the news for 18 hours. I don't think that's a scandal at all. I'm quite pleased about that. Finally there's a secret the vice president's office can keep."

"Apparently the reason they didn't release the information right away is they said we had to get the facts right. That's never stopped them in the past."

Slow Leak: How Cheney Stalled News Reports of Hunting Accident
Word of the mishap took 20 hours to get out as the Vice President insisted on telling a local newspaper before everyone else, sources say
By MIKE ALLEN/WASHINGTON

Posted Monday, Feb. 13, 2006
The Vice President was the press strategist, and Karl Rove was the investigative reporter. Vice President Cheney overruled the advice of several members of the White House staff and insisted on sticking to a plan for releasing information about his hunting accident that resulted in a 20-hour, overnight delay in public confirmation of the startling incident, according to several Republican sources.

"This is either a cover-up story or an incompetence story," said a top Republican who is close to the White House and has rarely been critical of the Administration in the past five years. "Karl was constrained, as was the entire communications operation, because the Vice President had arranged for how this was to come out."

I've always thought the swear-filter on Dave's was a bit of a joke, but anything that snags this guy on the way in can't be all bad.

The guy just had a heart attack because of a pellet that found it's way to his heart. Maybe he'll die and Cheney can be charged with manslaughter. That'd be great.

Its funy but what if the guy dies? As the previous poster said, I too would LOVE to see Cheney charged with manslaughter.

I don't have a lot of warm, fuzzy feelings for Cheney myself, but I find it a bit disconcerting to hear someone say it would be "great" if an innocent person was killed by him, so he could be charged with manslaughter. That's a bit much.
