Canada Stuns U.S. at WBC

Canada pulled off a shocker at the World Baseball Classic, riding the arm of Adam Loewen to an 8-6 victory over the powerful United States. The Canadians collected 13 hits and chased Florida Marlins starter Dontrelle Willis after taking a 5-0 lead in the third inning at Chase Field in Phoenix on Wednesday.

That was plenty of support for winner Loewen, who pitched more like a seasoned veteran than a left-hander who had never started a game above single-A. The 21-year-old Baltimore Orioles draft pick shut down a lineup full of major leaguers, blanking the U.S. on three hits over 3 2/3 innings in the preliminary-round game.

Regardless of the merits of the game itself, either way...

Does anybody else find the opening line of this CBC story um...unintentionally hilarious? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yeah.. its one of those things that every Canadian will know about in detail.. but probably few if any Americans will know anything about unless a Canadian tells them about it.

Thats what I find ironic about the title anyways..

Personally I never even heard of the 'World Baseball Classics' before.

sounds like something they say often in the Midwest of the U.S.. and and seemingly Ontario too.

As in.. 'they pulled a real shocker there, didn't they?'

'well that movie was a real shocker!'.. heard it so many times growing up.. but never outside of the U.S. Midwest myself (and I'm guessing common in the Ontario region, too?)

Why is it a shocker? It's the first WBC, so it's not as if the US has been winning it for decades. You guys probably don't know that baseball is the summer sport in Canada, so it's not as if the Canadian team lacks quality players.

Look at the hand, and then think "shock her". Maybe that will help, as the OP was commenting on the article itself, not the topic Smile

I knew about that. It's one of those stupid 'codes' teenagers have to make themselves feel smarter than adults.

psssssssst. This was a baseball GAME. Can we expect to see re-plays of it for the next 4 years?

One more example of how a very large country with a relatively small population acts just like a pretty small country with a relatively large population. Can anyone spell inferiority complex?

Oh c'mon...give us a break...We beat arguably the worlds best team in the sport with a team composed of marginal major leaguers....farm team players...and prospects.....give a dog a bone wouldja? This was a huge win!! No inferiority complex need be addressed here......
