This summer I'm thinking of returning to my sleepy little port city home of Halifax since it's been three years since my last visit.
But, everything I looked at online thus far suggests that I'm stuck using Air Canada.
Air Canada is crap. You shall never change my feelings on this.
Anyone know of some alternative routes that don't include Air Canada and where I can look them up? Train from Vancouver or Toronto? Renting a limo? Bribing a friend with gas money to meet me at Pearson? Walking? Joining a Chinese human smuggling ship?
I got five months to get it worked out.
Oh, and I do plan to come back here after a month or so in Canada. Got roots here now.

| Fly to TO on Cathay Pacific and then take the greyhound, only about 1 day's drive. Or hitchhike! |

Fly to TO, then catch one of the cheapy flights to Halifax:
Not sure which ones fly out there, but here's a few to look at:
WestJet
CanJet
Harmony Airways
Air Transat
Air Canada's service isn't the greatest. However, I have come across some very kind, and understanding flight attendants on International Air Canada flights. |

Alternatively you can fly any number of airlines to TO and Westjet from TO to Halifax (service 3x per day 7 days per week). It's a 3 hour flight.
The fare is $177CAD each way. |

I like the extra oomph you get out of that "shall" there. It's true, hating Air Canada is almost a religious experience for many of us Canucks.

Air Canada feels like a government owned airline (even though it's not).
Sober colors for its logo and aircraft interior - forest green & red
Very boring videos on the screen. Some dude explaining aircraft safety prceedures in English & French with a boring monotone voice.
Something is always broken on the plane (your chair's inclining / declining lock or the jack for your headset).
Bored flight attendents that don't make any effort to give cheerful service.
Man! There is NO SHORTAGE of people who can do this job. Why don't they include a person's personality at AC job interviews?
Never have enough English newspapers on hand (God help you if you get a seat in the back of the airplane).
No free food on domestic flights - even on long & expensive flights (ex: Vancouver to Toronto).
Air Canada must be the dullest flying experience on the planet. |

Heh, I always call it Aeroflot for those reasons.
Has anyone taken the train from T.O. to the east coast?
Yeah, I know for most central and western canucks, Toronto IS the east coast, but work with me here...  |

I did that once, back in the winter of '00-'01 -- actually, rode right through Christmas and New Year's on the train from T.O. to Halifax. Hm... hard to remember why that happened... Anyway, it was a great trip, one of my best memories of Canada over the past decade. -- New Year's in Montreal when the city was shut down by a blizzard overnight... great stuff! I was traveling with my (now ex-) mate who, as a Japanese on her first overseas venture, was by turns bewildered and thrilled at the trip as it unfolded. Way overpriced for a private cabin, but that's the way to go for a couple. No regrets there. |

Hey! Don't insult Aeroflot! They have better food than Air Canada and they don't show all of those boring videos. In fact, they show nothing (which is better).  The only pissy thing about Aeroflot is that there's no free alcohol on ANY flight.  |

What's sad is they won some award recently for best airline in North America. As sad as it is, it still beats the major American carriers.
Domestically I've flown AA, NorthWest, USAir, Air Canada, WestJet and Delta. (Or going back add Nordair into that mix.) They're all cattle cars these days on the domestic routes. But look at it this way: a meal costs airlines about $20-$25 per tray. I know we look at that food and figure its a $5 tops deal but making that special airline food costs extra bux. When we want $199 tickets on domestic routes, you can't expect a meal. |

Fly Singapore Airlines first-class. As you ascend into Nirvana and arc over the Arctic Circle down into Toronto, bail out the emergency exit door with carefully concealed parachute. Then hitchhike as dreams of Nirvana dance in your head. Just a thought.
Seriously, though, does SAS fly to Toronto? They're second best in my book. |
