FYI, the Taegu arsonist was just sentenced to life in prison- and it made page 3 of the Korea Herald. 191 people killed, hundreds more injured- page 3.
Just thought it was interesting. You know, two GIs accidentally kill 2 girls and it's a big deal for over a year, but something far more horrendous, done by a native, gets relegated to page 3.
Someone know where it placed in Korean language papers?

Tah.

It is really disgusting how little the public cares about what happened in Taegu. Just further proof that the accident that killed the 2 girls was exploited for purely political reasons.

Question to ponder. If the Taegu arsonist had been a foreigner, would ther still be any of us still left here teaching?

I've seen the light, and the light was good. Fukuoka, New Mexico, Europe, or bust!

Presumably, if the arsonist had been tried and acquitted by his employer instead of the Korean courts, the story night get a bit more play.

This has been done to death. US Sofa's are the same in all countries, and a Korean soldier committing a crime while on duty in the US would be dealt with by Korean military. It's not an argument.

Toomuchtime,

Newspapers are always doing stuff like that. Even in North America they put what sells onto the front page, these companies are just trying to put the most interesting news front and centre (notice the "centre" not "center")

I wrote the post that Kiwiboy responded to, but later deleted it. For some reason, his post went up anyway. My apologies.

OK OTOH, my apologies for jumping on it too ... I think I have too much time on my hands ... and yes, I think you did have a point there, but it would have been more powerfully put if more carefully worded ... on the issue, I'm undecided as usual ...

Well, I also think this matter was dealt with in a satisfactory manner. The man was punished to the full extent of the law. Koreans love to complain, what can they complain about here? That the man didn't get lynched?

In the APC incident the Korean public wanted to see the two men lynched, they didn't get that, hence all the fanfare and extended rhetoric.

It only becomes a national issue when Koreans don't get what they want. (Speed Skating Ono, APC Issue etc.)

Frankly I'm amazed there hasn't been more fallout from them losing the 2010 Winter Olympics.. I mean.. clearly, they were robbed... Rolling Eyes

Well, on THAT issue they're playing against the stereotype, and laying the blame on another Korean, the IOC guy.

True, dat.
But, this is akin to the Oklahoma City bombers being put on page 2 after their sentencing.
You'd think that this is the kind of stuff Koreans would want to know about (notice the 'aboot').

Just watch absolutely nobody in the Taegu local government take or find responsibility for this kind of incompetence and lack of safety and cutting of corners and breaking the laws on using flammable materials.

Just watch Taeguvians elect the Hannara party back to power again with a resoundingly popular majority in the next provincial election, so they can continue with their incompetence and lack of responsibility.

Taegu is a one party state and the local government could rape, pillage and murder and the locals still wouldn't make the connection.

If Taegu is considered to be a one party state with 77% support of the Hannara Party then I shudder to think what the Chollada people (especially Kwangju) would be considered to be with their 90%+ support of Noh and the MDP... Rolling Eyes
