Man, I had FUN at the last get-together, but leaving at 6 p.m. on Sunday to get into Gwangju at midnight for a 9 a.m. class Monday killed me!!
It seemed that most people I met were from the Seoul area. So, I will ask: would any of you cosmopolitan types Wink ever leave Seoul for a get-together in the "backwaters" of Korea (Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, Gwangju, etc...)? Might be good for a change of scenery. Might be closer to where I am, too.... Wink

Ha ha....well you know, some people think nothing compares to Seoul. Seoul to Busan, that IS a fair ways away. And you know, with Busan, they got those funny accents going there. Wink

I myself LOOOOOVED Busan when I went there last year.

But I must have taken the train from hell, cause from Mokpo, the train ride was a good eight hours. It might be better from Gwangju...

sorry katydid the train from gwangju to busan takes 7 hours. think it goes all the way up to Daejeon and go back south. At least thats what the train from Ulsan to Gwangju did I took last year during the WOrld Cup

why can't trains go east-west here like Gwangju to Daegu without going north to Daejeon? Its maddening

Cause the train company is on crack? Rudyflyer, if that is the case, Then I....will take...the bus! (if that happens to be any better....I think I remember that I took a bus back from Busan to Mokpo via Gwangju and that was like six hours.)

Well, if we ever have a get-together in another city, you know my vote will be for Gwangju! Smile

Hey...who edited my poll? Oh...Harpeau did. Smile

I'm TOTALLY thinking hypothetically, though if there ever is enough interest drummed up for people to come to Gwangju, I'd be happy to serve as tour guide....

The beer fest sounded cool until Cthulu ruinated it. It sounds like there's too much Korean beer for little ol' me.

Yes, as I mentioned elsewhere the beer fest is a bunch of outdoor tents, most of which serve Korean food and useless trinkets along with a few beer tents. The two beer tents have a good selection of imports and Becks Dark on tap, but unless you catch the concerts you just sit on plastic deck chairs in the middle of an spacious outdoor convention center square and drink your beer. I only go because I live right next to it.

Now, the microbrewery at Kwangali beach is another thing altogether--Stout, Pils and Weiss on tap for W4,500 or W5,000 for a 500ml. and there's a narrow outdoor patio section that commands a nice view of the view and some of the people walking by (It's directly along the main road). The place is called "Beach Bikini" and the stout is amazing. Now that would be a great place for a get-together (while the weather is nice, although the interior is spacious as well, with a Bulgarian and/or Filipino band playing pop music most evenings).

I'd like to check out GwangJu because I don't know any other way I'd get a chance..

I lived in Busan for one year quite awhile ago.. would be interesting to see it again as well.. and the beach is great during the summer.. we use to drink beer on the beach and hit Hyatt once we had enough beer on us.. always fun.

Katydid,

Well, I say that we really oughtta try to get a get-together more CENTRALLY located....problem is, anyone know of anyplaces conducive?

I'd say (looking at a map) 청주 (Cheongju) in 충정북도 (Choongcheongbukdo) may be a good bet. I've been there a few time, several univs. there in one area, so must be good for bars and clubs...

I already know Cheonan (천안) in Choong cheong nam-do would be good, and Zyz, Hotel Chonan and myself could set it up, as we live in the area....

I've got about 10,000 pyoung...maybe an outdoor party? Woo-hoo....but my house is small...bugger that.

Shoosh,

Ryst

Yeah, if you're looking for central and a huge group of friendly foreigners Cheong Ju is great. I spent last year there, lived a five minute stagger from the main bar district and spent many a saturday morning watching the sun rise from a galbi restaurant where we went after the bar closed.

Bonus: there's a pretty good Italian restaurant and a Subway sandwich shop in the bar district. Lots of the bars are foreigner friendly and I can definitely deal with going back there. Should even be able to track down a place with cheap beer and live music. . .

What about Anyang? Shes hip. Shes happening. And I live here.

Though another city would be cool - methinks though it would be best for a long weekend or something sim though, with travel time factored in. But hey, Katydid, I may just pop on down to see you some time.
