I am in the process of organising regular monthly poetry/spoken word performance nights in Daejeon at the Bad Apple Bar, starting Tuesday September 2nd, and I am looking for support and interest from local or nearby based poets and musicians.

The free-entry shows, called 'Word Up' involve an open mic section of poetry or prose readings, live acoustic styled music and a poetry slam with a bottle of the very finest Korean red wine as first prize.

If you are interested in performing for 'Word Up', or just want more information, email me on [email protected] , or turn up on the first Tuesday of every month.

Hope to see you there.
Regards, The (ahem) artist formerly known as Prozac Boy, but now known as Plastic B.

*cringe*

I'm not interested in participating, but I might go look at it sometime. I really hate spoken word performances...

As we say back home in the Goldfields...there's only one thing worse than poetry, and that's a poet. Strangely though, despite a natural revulsion to the form, once I tried it, I discovered poetry to be only half as execrable as I'd imagined...it kinda grows on you, like a fungus. Mr. Green

Dunno about anybody else, but Word Up starts on Tuesday 2nd of September and I'm getting excited. Some may say it doesn't take a helluva lot to get me excited, but this time I'm really excited...next week I get a chance to embarrass myself before a whole new bunch of people. Ooh, the piquancy...

"Word Up" @ The Bad Apple bar is the latest addition to Daejeon's cultural calendar. "Word Up" presents spoken word, poetry and acoustic music and features infamous West Australian MC, Plastic B.

Kicking off around 9pm on Tuesday 2nd of September, this regular monthly show offers an opportunity for writers and artists from all genres of the performing arts to present their material in public to a sympathetic and appreciative audience.

The format follows an open mic approach with a five minute maximum slot for all comers who wish to participate, or punters can sit back and have a laugh at the noisy or nervous antics of their friends and co-workers. Each "Word Up" event will also feature a 'poetry slam', a pressure cooker two-minute rapid fire focus which offers a bottle of the very finest Korean red wine as a prize.

Musicians who bring an instrument, or singers who just bring their voice, will have an opportunity to perform up to three songs on the starry stage of the Bad Apple's purpose built stage, which features a very fine sound system for acoustic styled acts.

To find The Bad Apple in Daejeon, go past Walmart towards Chung-nam University, turn left at the lights at the bridge. Go along the river and turn left at the first set of lights. The Bad Apple is on the right a couple of buildings past the police station on the fourth floor above the "Channel Q" convenience store, which displays a bright yellow sign.

If you're taking a taxi just say Wall-pyong Jo-deung Hak-yo. The driver should drop you off in front of the school which is across the street from the police station.

Come along to "Word Up" and participate, or just relax and spectate, it's free entry for all. Shocked

Yeah! I found the place. I've been feeling a bit isolated here in Daejeon because I'm the only foreign teacher at my school, so I haven't found anyplace foreigners hang out. Bummer, it's Sunday and it was closed, but I feel better already. Anyway, when the bad apple's website is working it has this little neighborhood map which is completely useless for trying to find the place, so out of pure passive-aggressiveness I made this one:

And here's the link for the Complete Map of Daejeon. I love maps. With them you can find anything. Without them you have to follow people's directions, which are always faulty Wink

Spoken word? Jesus Christ! This is still going on?
Now I'm definitely voting for Bush in 2004.
What a bunch of morons.

God damn retroactive crap for the sake of being different. I am so sick of these pansies who have never been mugged by a gang of african americans.

My Dearest Plastic C,
Thanks for the map! Things have been going so well in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that I now plan to organize a new Chilldren's Crusade modeled loosely of those of the 14th Century.

Only 5 minutes! May I make a brief slide show presentation before hand?

I've been in touch with my dear friends in Langly , Miami, and Lagos as well as UNESCO.

The Tankers will be "refueling" at Posco, but I need not tell you this.

The fish is red, the sky is blue, the fish is red. Tora, Tora Tora.

In some freak exhibition of synchronicity, all open poetry readings, all over the world, are held on Tuesday nights. I lived in a city of 1.3 million clowns that managed to have no spoken word gigs, except for the four held on Tuesday nights. Go figure...

But Tuesday nights are kinda traditional and it makes kooky sense. Monday night is a write off, Wednesday night has good TV, Thursday night is late night shopping, Friday and Saturday nights are too drunk, Sunday's are too hungover. Tuesday night is poetry's only chance. And that's a slim chance at best.

Hope to see you there sometime, Plastic B.

My Dearest Plastique C,

So happy I am to hear from you. My colleagues have won a most important VICTORY from the Ugandan Army of the Lord and are now rapidly advancing upon Bukavu. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/content_objectid=13294482_method=full_siteid=50143_headline=-CHILD%2DCANNIBAL%2DKILLERS%2DOF%2DTHE%2DCONGO-name_page.html MOST JOYOUS NEWS of course, but I need not tell you this. In fact my needs are few as we both know oh so well.

In celebration I've been working on a sort of dance routine, something along the lines of Chipendale's (I'm still working on downloading the spell checker) something I call Chip and Dale's. Do you suppose we could work that in? Perhaps before the slide show on the Glomar Explorer and Project Jennifer? We could perhaps leave out some of the Zappruder footage and just focus on the Grassy Knoll?

Cheery link you posted there MDR. About as cheery as a truckload of dead babies...as for the Chip and Dales, I've always fancied naked chipmunks, but can you do the voices?

The inaugural Word Up held Tuesday 2nd of September could best be described as an intriguing mixture of eclectic wordsmithery. A boisterously healthy crowd of about thirty enjoyed the salubrious surrounds of Daejeon's premier expat venue, The Bad Apple Bar.

Amongst the highlights were Robert, who popped the cherry as first open mic poet. He started nervously, but opened up deliciously with three piquant poems. The first Dave of the night offered crazily scattered gems which appeared to be scribbled on a paper tablecloth, while Bonnie's hilarious ode to a Korean food stallholder resonated with obsessive love gone wrong.

Numerous other performers seized the opportunity to get on the mic, all of them v.cool, or sensitive, or both. The evening's entertainment was skillfully presented with manic aplomb by notorious Twisted Evil MC, Plastic B.

The next Word Up is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6th, from 9ish 'til way past midnight. Interested poets, performers and acoustic acts should contact Plastic B on [email protected]

Hi there (ahem) poetry lovers!

As a further attraction to the spectacular auditory feast that is Word Up @ The Bad Apple Bar we are pleased to announce the inaugural presentation of "King Konglish".

"King Konglish" is your chance to share your found quirky Korean mangulisations of English as she is writ. "King Konglish" offers a prize of a tasty burger fresh from the kitchen of The Bad Apple as judged by popular acclaim and belly laughs. Needless to say, competition will be stiff to claim the prize.

Poetry, music and hilarity, Word Up @ The Bad Apple has it all. Make sure you get your self, your writing and your found gems down to The Bad Apple on Tuesday the 7th of October from 9ish 'til way past midnight. Oh, did I mention it's free entry...
