Everyone has different opinions on what is deemed 'abuse' and have different opinions of what should be done about it, if anything. So its helpful for all of us to talk about such things here.
In the past, users have complained about us to seemingly operate in shadows with our own policies and agendas. For the past week or so, we're making the effort to dispel these rumors and give users a chance to have feedback on what they individually feel ails this forum. So now, some of the swinging purses are coming out and are complaining that there are too many feedback threads going on and are now wanting us to go back into the shadows again. You must appreciate now that there's always going to be something to complain about, if we are following around user opinion based on what the complaint du jour is. We've long accepted the reality that there will never be a time where we can expect to see a unanimous chorus line of users singing how great the mods are.

So what we've decided to do, is to take a few weeks to suss user opinion and polling on issues, before we step back and return to forum governance based on that feedback.

If a few weeks of seeing an increase of mod feedback threads is so utterly inhospitable to some users, then I sincerely think its time for a few of you to get up and go for a walk to get some fresh air.

I was happy the way the forum was.

I was happy the way this thread was, until some of the replies got deleted.

Good debate.

I can't believe anyone would whine about someone's posting style. Personally, I thought it was cute...kind of a velvet glove over the iron fist thing. If nothing else, it beats all the trolls who think being negative is the height of creativity and humor.

You should at least give a citation for the source of the quote.

My point was not about WHO said it. It wouldn't make any difference to me who said it, I would still feel the same.

I take it that it was your whine and you felt short-changed because you didn't get credit for your immortal words.

I hope the majority of posters agree that there are much more pressing issues that need contending with, rather than concerning ourselves if a mod exhibits some wit in their posts.

The makings of a great poll.

Reading your next post and the veiled way you are bringing up beefs about Enrico and Gopher, reveals that you also are no stranger to attempts at wit. And such veiled barbs are the RIGHT way to bring about a better forum?

True enough. These veiled barbs didn't accomplishing anything. Clearly, I need to do more bootlicking before barbing. Inform on some people. Earn me some cyber-props from on high so I can barb untroubled.

Anyways, we will make note of you expressing 'do as I say, not as I do'. Now lets please return to discussion of the larger issues at hand.

Well, the discussion at hand is "I liked this forum the way it was". I don't think my post was off-topic. Nor do I see it as hypocrisy to suggest that mods have a different role to play than users.

But thanks for the feedback.

Whether you mean to, you're making a good argument for mods to have socks and keep their erstwhile IDs secret. I agree with the person who said it's refreshing to have the mods posting as mods, and discuss not only moderating policy and board behavior but also how such policies and behaviors are to be sought and implemented.

(Some discussion boards have separate forums for just this and nothing else, helps keep the distractions to a minimum - last few weeks, I bet there's been a bit more discussion ABOUT the Curent Events Forum than of Current Events themselves ... Laughing )

Nice to hear from The Lemon again. He's right about just about everything.

I agree. Let's talk about it.

1. Accusing another poster of criminal behavior, or of personal habits which might produce tangible damage to their reputation.

Not everyone here is anonymous. Some of us are known, due to having allowed out pictures to be shown on the site, or otherwise. "Are you high?" might be an allowable, kidding-around kind of remark ... or it might a serious intent to cause harm to the person, perhaps even to have such a remark turn into a rumor that could (possibly) affect one's employment life. And there ARE people here who would be happy to cause harm to other individuals merely because of differences in political or other kinds of opinions.

2. Hate speech is not just dumb and ugly, in some places it's a crime with severe punishments attached.

Bigotry doesn't add meaningfully to discussion, and while generally I support the free speech rights of bigots to out themselves as fools and haters, there is something that moderators, especially, need to consider : any kind of lawsuit or civil action brought against the owners of this site would immediately kill these forums. Completely and irrevocably. No more CE Forum, and probably no more ESL Cafe. Gone. I'm not making this up.

3. It's kind of cool that the swear filter seems to be an artifact of history. Too much profanity, though, not only makes the poster who uses it look like a tool, it brings down the general appearance of the site.

Also, it lacks creativity, and it gets boring fast.

That's all I can think of right now ...
