ok... we're off again...
the post is not about eating on the subway, street and busses...
the post was titled- "eating on the subway"
But the question was "Is it impolite to eat in front of people if you're not in a designated "eating zone" restaurant, street vendor, etc...? "
|
Answer: It is generally considered rude to eat outside of those zones if you are not seated. And is dependant on the food, for example: ice cream is one food that can be eating on the run and would not be considered rude. |

[quote="Ilsanman"]If I saw someone acting totally Korean, I would not be impressed. I would think you are a lemming or someone who has been rejected by your home country.[quote]
Thats a pretty lame comment. Someone tries to adapt to their situation so they're a lemming?? So does that make American a country of lemmings?? Interesting |

| I majored in Korean studies for three years, and have lived here for another 3. I've had this discussion with both academics and laymans. The concept of eating in a group came up many a time but in a different concept. If you eat alone in a restaurant people will look and stare, often they'll comment. But the post is about eating on the subway, street and buses. The arguement of eating in a group would mean that people wouldn't look at you if there was three or four of you eating burgers as you went?? Dont think so. |
so if i eat my mcdonalds whilst sitting on the ground on the street that would be ok and nobody would stare.
but, if i eat alone in a restaurant people would stare.
basically, you're saying I can't eat alone anywhere then.

this comes from confucianism, the belief is that everybody should eat together... if i eat on the street i could be seen as a poor, somebody who has no friends or somebody without culture education..
even if they do stare it is not because they are offended it is because they are thinking that you are poor, somebody who has no friends or somebody without culture education.. |

I said I agreed with what you had written before about eating with others, but thats not the reason people stare when you walk down the street and eat at the same time.
Like you said its not rude to eat alone, people feel sorry for you. Eating while you are walking is rude. Two different circumstances, two different norms. |

Well I'm not an English teacher. But, rather than just cover city to city buses, you should have mentioned, taxi cabs, ferries, monorails, boats, ships, and battleships as well. Or maybe, bicycles, rollerblades, push carts, and walking backwards. I admit when I'm wrong, as i have done in posts in my past. But all I have to admit here is you're very bored and have nothing better to do in your life.
Your posts are silly. Why? Because there is no point except TRYING to point out other peoples' petty mistakes. No? Whenever you do, good job and you deserve a standing ovation. But, I haven't seen one instance of this yet. |
You're not a English teacher? Then one wonders what you are doing on this forum. I've pointed out many of your mistakes, but you never admit that you are wrong or that they are mistakes. Did you miss Gord's post by the way? Just wondering because you seem to respond to everyone who posts to or about you, except for him. I'm "very bored and have nothing better to do in my life"? Sounds like that is a better description of you, as you have personally replied to every poster (with the exception of Gord). Time hanging heavy on your hands? |

You're learning fast. If one makes eating a private act akin to mastering one's own work tools (*wink*), or an act one only participates in when there are plenty of others involved (*wink, wink*), you'll be slim and fit in no time.
It's the Korean way, dontchaknow?
Now please sate your appetite in the broom closet, cat-man.

Answer: Yes!
Have you looked at Korean buses? They engineering masterpieces in simplicity: metal box with wheels. Who cares if you spill. Some of you kids are really getting out of hand, making posts that decribe spilling a coke as the next valeze oil spill. It's OK, eat your chilly corn karne on the bus. ANy complaints, tell them to come directly to me at Seoulmon via Davesesl. Seoul out |

If you saw the way I witnessed a bus driver react when someone left an empty can on the bus and it continued to clank and roll around while the driver demanded that someone pick up the can and bring it to him, and when nobody did he blew his lid, you might take that back.

Intercity buses on the other hand, gorge away & drink beers & share those fried baby potatoes with the folks across the aisle & its all good.
Evidently an accepted eating zone. |
