I understand that in some of the heavily travelled tourist zones of Thailand people can often find that L.O.S. is not some tranquil oasis. However, why should it be? Many people seem to have this romanticised version of Thailand and they are disappointed that they didn't wander onto a golden, deserted beach to be greeted by a gentle race of people, who stared in awe and wonderment at the foreigner, and offered to climb the tallest palm to get them a coconut to drink. What happens is you race across a busy road to be greeted by a dozen touts and a persistent beach boy who repeats "jet ski, jet ski." These are built up areas where they are trying to turn a buck. People seem to judge the Thais more harshly than other places where people earn their living almost exclusively from tourism. Expect them to try and rip you off. The Thais are a proud people who due to being a poor country have had to suck it up and put up with some of the worst-behaved tourists in the world, and have adjusted accordingly. Thais can be impusive in their actions and when pushed they will start swinging first and think about their actions later. When I am in my wife's home province there has been less exposure to foreigners therefore they are less jaded. People wave and smile openingly once they've spotted you more than once. Sometimes friends and family ask me to buy them some Lao Khao, because they assume I can afford it. And the fact is I can. 30 TB for a little generosity goes a long way there. I had one guy go and buy me a bigger hammock one day as a gift because he said I was too tall for the other one we had. Thailand and Thais cannot be judged based on the tourist meccas alone.

One of the better, and more insightful, posts I've read about Thailand.
Chok dee.

I read a lot of 'stupid brit insults on this thread - and thats OK because we actually don't care - we know what we are about and thats enough - you will never get us crying to the mods because we get called 'setpic tank' like some of our ultra-sensitive bretheren across the Atlantic Ocean for example. Cool

So - to the video.

The United Kingdom is a very violent place full of very violent people. The guy in the orange shirt is a typical specimen.

The star of the show knew what he was doing and what he was doing was upping the ante knowing that in 85% of cases the other guy will back down if you shout and gesticulate loudly enough. Was he in the wrong? More than likely if another Brit watching the melee then laughs at him getting a kicking. Brits abroad are pretty clannish in that respect and would not take any pleasure in seeing their countryman getting a hiding off a load of foreigners in a bar. Fair play issues are a big deal for most Brits thus the guy in the orange shirt overstepped the mark big time for his fellow countrymen to take such delight in getting the crap knocked out of him.

All is fair in love and war. One man was took away to hospital thus he lost.

However - there is no honour in what happened - the little *beep* who walloped him blindsided him and ran away as fast as he could - I don't give a shite what you think about it - it is beyond doubt the whole attack was cowardly beyoind belief.

The British guy knew what he was doing, but he decided to gamble and he lost - and the same would have happened to him back home.

The Thais deserve it because they attract the vermin of the anglophone world to their shores (as well as Germans, Dutch, Russians and Scandinavians) because everything is for sale. Everything has a price and thus horrible scum fly out there - who know the price of everything and the value of nothing - turn into something fetid and disgusting.

Thailand might be saved as Vietnam and Laos become the new Thailand and the scum who are there will move on to their new home and get more jollies for their buck. Leaving the decent farangs alone with their hosts. Lets hope so eh?

I visited Thailand this summer and thought it was a dump full of repulsive foreigners and smarmy locals. Everyone I talked to back in Korea talked about Thailand like it was paradise. Eventually, I gave up on trying to explain why I didn't have a great time and just gave a stock answer that my vacation was "good." Anyway, thanks for validating my opinion, everyone.

Now thread ends.

Unless we can read their minds, we can't really speculate on whether or not it was a race thing. What is clear is that the guy, idiot or not, got sucker punched from behind, and then kicked while he was down.

One more time, it's a business, not a dueling establishment. This wasn't a personal fight between the drunk guy and the guy who punched him from behind. This was bouncers getting a guy out of the bar. Yes, he was probably ripped off. Yes, the guy who kicked him when he was out was a douche. When your job is to fight off rowdy customers, though, honor isn't your primary concern. This is like saying a sniper in the army/marines has no balls because the person they shot couldn't see them.

Yes, agree with this sentiment totally. I didn't see the guy kick him when I first viewed the video, so my comments were based on the first punch. I have to agree that the guy who kicked him in the face was a coward and a douche bag, because putting your foot in someone's face is also the worst slur in Thailand and was unnecessary in this case.

Also, why does everyone hate Thailand so much? I've only been there once, but once I left Cebu, the place seemed pretty enjoyable. Some of the Thailand haters may have considerably more experience in the country than I do, but this seems similar to judging Korea by what you see in Itaewon.

OK, this is where you and I differ. As you said, you've only been there once - enough said. Quite frankly, you are the one judging it as someone who's made one trip to Itaewon. But, I don't judge that if you've only been there once. However, that should tell you right away that you shouldn't go looking down on the opinions of people who lived there and know more about the place than you.

Oh, right - so you speak for all Brits now? I never find a need to run to the mods to take on anti-American remarks, because I can handle hypocrites and bigots on my own.

All the touristy places are like that: Bangkok, Phuket, and most definitely Pattaya (Samui and Chiang Mai are starting to go that way if they haven't already). These places are just like the Mos Eisley cantina: "a wretched hive of scum and villainy"

Off the beaten track, away from the sex tourists, cheating tuk-tuk drivers, and buy-this-crap touts, it's actually quite nice because the locals don't feel the need to *beep* themselves out for farang dollars and fewer still feel the need to rip you off.

Don't cause crap in other countries, especially when alone and have had a few. Having said that, the kid who threw the sucker punch deserves something a lot worse; good thing Neil is already in jail.

Oops, I meant Phuket, not Cebu. I'm not saying I know what I'm talking about with Thailand more than the people who have been many times, but what many people are saying seems to be about touristy areas. Someone mentioned going to Phuket six or so times, and others are commenting on places like Patong and Pattaya.

Those areas are definitely the worst by far, but if you don't adequately understand the culture and what is going on around you anywhere in LOS, you can find yourself in a world of trouble, even for innocently going along your way.

Be careful in the Land of Smiles. There are 100 different meanings for a smile there anyway.

Not gonna lie, if any of y'all think of Korean is hard on the ears (I for one don't, I actually think it's loads more aesthetically pleasing than Mandarin for example) be glad you are not in Thailand.

Thai sounds like a drunk guy on helium mumbling while gargling bad mouthwash.

OPINION, that's all.
