wont be long before SAMSUNG and LG make a phone which will blast the Iphone out of the water!
once samsung and Lg realize they are losing market share, TV commercials with Soh Dam BI is not gonna save them..
so they will bring out the bad ass phone to win back the locals..
So, Im gonna pass on the Iphone and wait for next summers new phone which should be badass.. not to mention the plans will be kickass too... |

you like the Ipod??? dang.. wont see me with one of those.. such a hassle to put music on them..
but.. what I mean is .. that LG/Samsung knows it's local market..
they know what koreans want.. most koreans are just gonna buy the Iphone for bragging rights.. but after a while realise it can't do the things they want it to do.. so samsung and Lg being the rip off artists they are..
they will make a phone with all the functions that the iphone have, and then MUCH MORE! and win back the korean locals.. mark this post..1 or 2 years from now, Ill bring this post back up with a link to the new samsung phone... |

I see what your saying, but LG and Samsung, who've been doing pretty well in the phone market abroad, so far haven't been able to come up with a comparable phone to compete with the iPhone abroad, despite copying its interface and design. Omnia? Chocolate 2? No dice. The only serious competitor to iPhone's market has been from Palm and Blackberry.
I don't have an iPod currenty, but I do miss having one. There's loads of advantages it had compared to my Cowon. Transferring music wasn't great, but it also had its advantages (instantly organized, copying playlists directly) that Cowon doesn't have. |

Samsung and LG do not have a competitive advantage when it comes to smartphones. They saw it as a niche market.
The only people with smart phones were businessmen who didn't need to worry about the high data plans, and who needed to check emails on the go, anytime they needed.
The iPhone, with the ability to hop onto Wifi, has changed the game. Now people don't need expensive data plans to use a smart phone's features. They can simply find the nearest hotspot.
Google's Android platform is the equalizer. Samsung or LG will put out a GREAT smartphone using Android. They will not be able to do it with their own proprietary software. |

Anyone know how contract length and existing KT services might modify service charges?
I picked up KT internet and television specifically because the operator at the time told me it would reduce the overall costs of the combined services... but now that the iPhone launch is on the horizon I can't seem to find anyone who can say for sure. |

According to phonestore.show.co.kr:
3Gs 16GB: 814,000원. ($748 CAD, $706 USD, 471 Euro as of now)
3Gs 32GB: 946,000원. ($869 CAD, $821 USD, 548 Euro as of now)
Chris_Dixon: $NZD964 for 3Gs 16GB and $NZD1120 for 3Gs 32GB.
Unfortunately, you can't reserve it online without a two-year contract, according the SHOW. But, you can buy it in-store sans-contract. I'll be doing that in Ulsan on Saturday (hopefully).
These prices are pretty much in line with the rest of the world. However, I'd rather pay the $900 or so for the officially unlocked iPhone (from Hong Kong or Italy or Thailand) and use it here (and everywhere else in the world) without worrying about Apple blocking jailbreaking and unlocking. Of course, I'd then have to tack on an extra 360,000 won to get it certified.
Slightly off-topic: I've used many Korean smartphones that teachers and friends have shown me. I haven't seen one that comes close to the polish of the iPhone. Animations aren't smooth, the user interface is unintuitive, etc. And they still have to use a stylus to use some of them! This isn't 1999 and Palm Pilots aren't cool anymore. Plus, many don't even have the proper keyboard layout; they took a standard button 1-9 number pad and made it the virtual on-screen keyboard. Ridiculous. |

You can package everything together and get a pretty good discount on your monthly bill.
The bad news is that you will have to sign a 2 year a contract for all 3 services. If you are sure you aren't going to switch internet/tv providers for the next 2 years then go ahead and package it all together. |

Don't mean to continue this detour of the thread, but as far as numbers go for Samsung and LG, I might have overestimated their significance abroad. Check out this info:

The iPhones sold around the world are 99% identical (minus the one from China lacking wifi), except that they tend to be locked (in software) to the carrier that sells them. So an iPhone on AT&T in the US can only be used on AT&T's network. When the first iPhone came out hackers defeated the locking mechanism (through software patches) so that iPhones could be used on other networks. This is still the case today. A Korean iPhone will only work on SHOW or KTF but can be unlocked to be used anywhere else.
However, Apple also sells a carrier-free (officially unlocked) iPhone which works on any carrier by default. So you can update it with the latest firmware patches and it will still work. The hacked-unlocked phones need to be updated carefully otherwise they could lose their unlocked status (since it was hacked to begin with).
If you buy an iPhone here you will be able to use it in NZ if you download unlocking software. It's not illegal by any means to use it; it's just not supported by Apple. Apple tried to make it illegal in the US but failed.
