There is a world of difference between an Eagle and a Chicken. |
Regardless of what you feel are the differences between chickens and eagles, they are still birds. And regardless of what you feel are the differences between mercenaries and members of national militaries, they are both still soldiers. My point is that things can have differences and still belong to the same overall group, and I made it in response to you trying to disqualify mercenaries from being soldiers.
Chickens are different than eagles in some ways, but they're still birds. Mercenaries are different than members of national militaries in some ways, but they're still soldiers. Even the dictionary definition of mercenary includes the term soldier:

What I'm trying to point out is that the "Massive Budget Surplus" that the dissolution of the military would produce would probably be dwindled down due to tax cuts and pork-barrel projects. Remember these decisions are in the hands of democratically elected politicians, not an enlightened panel of 'wise men and women'. |
If we're going to talk about what the corrupt idiots the American people tend to elect would do in this situation, why stop there? They'd never even abolish the military in the first place.
Given the situation we're discussing here -- worldwide abolition of militaries -- is an act of goodness and wisdom far beyond the current capability of the world's politicians, I think it's fair to say that if it ever came about, the great men and women who brought it about couldn't possibly be judged by the standards of today's corporate sell-outs and ideologues.
As I said, I think this "political difficulties" argument is a total non-starter. We've no idea what the political climate would be like, but it's hard to imagine one in which world-wide consensus on military disbandment could be reached, yet retain the idiotic short-sightedness required to follow up by pissing away needed funds on things like pork-barrel projects and excessive tax cuts. |
