| Now, I do speak Korean and can write Korea too. I sent a letter to the station concerning this show (English copy and Korean copy). I did that many times in the past when I felt something was offensive or wrong. |
Good man. Is there any way you could make the letter available to the rest of us so that we could also send one and let our feelings be known?

Finally, lots of long term expats/residents in Korea do a lot of work in their community and "represent" foreigners quite well through their actions and deeds. Perhaps such people, even if they do speak Korean, do not feel the need to explode every time some sensationalist grab piece report is aired?
Does that make such people "sycophantic foreign gimp for Korean society and their prejudices"? Lets be serious here...come on now. |
Realistically our actions and deeds can only take us so far. Come the hour, cometh the man - the foreigner on this show had the chance to speak out against the xenophobic hate filled report he had just watched but he chose not to. Therefore I see him as a foreigner who is eager to please Korean society and is therefore used by Koreans for their own purposes/enjoyment, or a sycophantic foreign gimp. |
Why would I share this letter here or with YOU?
All you will do is crap all over it, insult me, and try to insuate I am a liar like you have done on many other threads. No thanks.
I sent it, they received it. That is sufficient for me. My wife sent one as well, as did many of our friends in Korea.
You want to do something, write your own letter and get off your butt instead of whining about it here.
You do love to throw out insults at people you disagree with. You did not like how that foreigner handled himself on TV? You feel he should have spoken out more? Well, you have your chance: write the station, start a petition (some pro-active foreigners I know did that through facebook and wil submit the petition to the station and to the government), speak about this with your Korean co-workers, get them involved....all that ha sa chance of changing things, spouting off HERE and calling a foreigner you saw on TV a sycophantic foreign gimp accomplishes nothing except perhaps make you feel better about yourself.
So, now why on earth would I bother to share anything I do or write with you?
What if I was not insulting enough for you in my letter? oh no!!! I will be called a sycophantic foreign gimp!
No thanks. |

I'm just looking at the guy during the show and wondering what he must be thinking. All that time he spent building his career, learning Korean, being "accepted", and this is the thanks he is given. He has to sit there and explain some horribly produced video about a foreigner using lame pick up lines to have a one night stand with a Korean girl. If it was actually a carefully constructed argument that made valid points I could understand. Instead it was like some ridiculous skit made for a highschool class. It really makes me want to put effort into learning all about Korean culture and learning the Korean language. I can't think of a better way to spend my free time. Maybe then I will have the honor of watching a show like that and defending my fellow westerners. Seriously, what an honor, seriously. No....I mean seriously.
I think he is wrong in his podcast too. Korea does not have racism because it is homogenous. Korea is homogenous because it has racism. It is a country that has made a conscious effort to remain homogenous and free of other cultures. Korea is free to make that decision, but it shouldn't excuse ignorance. |
Well said. I listened to what he had to say in his podcast and he just seemed to be making the same tired excuses in the hope he will escape any criticism. |
"Maybe if I try really hard they will like me and accept me": Thinks Sam I am. "I would not criticize Korea on a TV show, I would not criticize it to others, I would not even criticize it if paid to": said Sam I am. "Nor would I eat Green Eggs and Kimchi. Not here, not there, or anywhere."
Ok, mocking sarcasm of this apologist aside. Makes me wish I could speak the langauge. First time some Koreans talked sh!t about us whiteys if I were on a TV show; I'd be pointing out all their hypocracy in Korean in all of it's unabashed blunt glory. No apologies coming from my lips. That'd shut them up real fast! |
Why would it? Pointing out the hypocrisies of Korea-haters on these threads doesn't accomplish squat.
That's not to say you shouldn't speak your mind and point out some crap that goes on here. Might do some good. |
korea haters usually hate korea because of personal experiences.
the people we see on these tv shows usually hate foreigners because they saw a news report about X on MBC (or because their mum told them to).
slight difference... |
I see. So one side an be explained with some perspective (they just had personal experiences) while the other side is presented as a granite block and without perspective (they just are that way because of what they saw).
Outstanding. |
sorry patrick, i dont have hours and hours tp try to make a point. |
It would not have taken hours, mere minutes and two or three sentences would have sufficed. This was more about intent than time.
Cheers |

Let them keep their xenophobia. I used to be upset about Korean depictions of foreigners, now I simply chuckle to myself and enjoy the spectacle of Korea repeatedly shooting itself in the foot. You want to take thousands of potential goodwill ambassadors for Korea each year and turn them into life-long enemies who have nothing good to say about your country, knock yourself out.

Friends? Hardly.
Copy my letter? I stand on my previous position, you can write your own if this truly does matter to you so much. Call it a learning exercise for you and a good chance to practice your Korean (if you intend to write it in that language).
My advice if you want to be read and heard: keep it polite and rational.
Good luck. |

I think TV shows like this are a contributing factor to why so many job ads (for teaching positions of all ages, university jobs included) say "female only":

That's from a show that used to be popular a few years ago. It was kind of like Jerry Springer. They'd reenact some bad things people did and then those people would confront each other on TV. That episode was called "Foreign teachers and club girls." At the end you can see a Korean girl confronting one of the teachers that raped her and the teacher who cheated on her. |
Wow. Thanks for posting. That was an intense show. I think the police should have gotten involved afterwards regarding the rape allegations. |
At the end of the show the "American" (played by a Russian actor) is taken off the jail. This episode is still airing, by the way. I saw it on TV twice recently.

| What's happening in this show is that even though the whole thing is fake, they try to make it look real by re-enacting the actors on the stage. |

| The latter part of the show plays out like an investigative journalist's wet dream as the "real" actors are caught in the act and exposed on air. Lastly, in the host's Final Thoughts, we are warned to be careful of all these strange foreigners in our land. |
