Are you basing this all on actual life experience or just something you read / perceptions you've developed in your head...?

I'm just having fun, but since you asked, I'm basing it on three things. My life experience on the road, the literature I have read from other travelers and tourists, and yes, my own perceptions I've developed in my head.
But so what? We're calling one type of person a traveler and another a tourist. What's the big deal about doing that? You and the OP are the ones coming off like the reformed alcoholics who suddenly found God. You sound like you were once young, naive, self-righteous backpacker-types thinking you were Marco Polo, and needed to call yourself "travelers" to differentiate yourselves from the others; and now that you know that it wasn't true, you've swung the other way and are now worldy, sophisticated tourists -- and ha! -- anyone who calls themselve anything different is naive like you once were. |

tourists would rather visit 100 countries and get a taste of it
travellers would rather know one country intimately |

A traveler is someone who moves from place to place.
A tourist is someone who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure.
travel is an act.
touring is a motive.
you can tour your hometown and not have traveled.
you can travel to or through china and not plan on enjoying it.
literally speaking.
or...
travelers visit other peoples hometowns and take pictures.
tourists visit your hometown and take pictures. |
