just what does a WEST coast accent sound like anyways?

and which choices in the test trigger a Western accent "response"?
on my ratings.. the highest was Midland... the West was dead last..

and if that's the case.. and that's the "neutral" accent, then I am going to call MASSIVE BULLSHIT on this "neutrality.

either that, or these people in the "west' simply never learned proper pronounciation! the same one you hear on all the national media and news shows, etc.

btw.. just for kicks.. I have the test to my VP and my 2 co teachers and their answers were very similar to mine with one or two differences.

they almost all got lumped into Inland North but mostly Pennsylvania/Northeast variety. actually 2 were midwest but with Midlands in 2nd place, Northeast in first and the third was classified as a Philly person outright.

I was Midwestern but with Midlands as biggest influence.

I remain absolutely convinced that this is the "standard" or "neutral" accent.

Prove me wrong.

What about "paws" and "pause"? That's the same sound to most people in the Northeast US. Same for Aussies?

Yep. I scored 'Northeast' on my 1st go. Not 'poh', but 'poor' for 'paw'. I was pretty strong on 'Midlands' & 'South' too.
