| I visited Thailand this summer and thought it was a dump full of repulsive foreigners and smarmy locals. |
All the touristy places are like that: Bangkok, Phuket, and most definitely Pattaya (Samui and Chiang Mai are starting to go that way if they haven't already). These places are just like the Mos Eisley cantina: "a wretched hive of scum and villainy"
Off the beaten track, away from the sex tourists, cheating tuk-tuk drivers, and buy-this-crap touts, it's actually quite nice because the locals don't feel the need to *beep* themselves out for farang dollars and fewer still feel the need to rip you off. |
I don't know about Samui, but Chiang Mai is a fairly normal place. In fact, I would even say that almost everyone that I have met in Chiang Mai, have been quite honest and sincere. By the way, I have been living there now since last July. Anyways, I have to agree with you. A lot of people on this thread have formed overly negative opinions of Thailand when they have not even seen the real Thailand. |

Posters on this thread may be interested in a rather interesting Brit TV series called "Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand", which documents the work of foreign volunteer "tourist police".
Here is a description:
LONDON: The fall schedule on Bravo U.K. will be led by the new eight-part documentary series Big Trouble in Tourist Thailand, launching on the male-skewing channel on September 7.
Slated in a 10 p.m. slot, the original commission promises unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to Thailand's tourist police forcethose charged with policing Westerners unfamiliar with the country's customs and laws. The show follows three specially recruited British expats who are part of the force. The show, filmed in tourist hotspots like Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chang Mai, features previously unseen rescue scenes following the crash of a Bangkok Airways crash in Koh Samui, as well as other incidents involving tourists in Thailand. In addition to following the Tourist Police, the series features the Royal Navy Military Police, the British Consulate, SWAT teams and Thai Emergency Services.
The torrent seems to have disappeared from the site I use. it may be available elsewhere, though.
The first episode was not bad. |

OMG that was pwnage!!! That guy was being a dickhead, he totally deserved it. He wanted a drink he hadn't paid for and he thought he could get away by being an ass like he does in his country. That punch was thrown by a 15 year old!!! The older guy was clearly trying to be polite to him.
BTW are you people blind? The punch was not "from behind" it was from the side. He could've countered if he knew how to fight at all. It's funny to watch him fall like a sack of potatoes what a wuss. |

| Screw that. He was cold-cocked without even seeing it. That Thai kid was a wussy. If you want to fight, then fight. Don't hit someone from an angle they can't see. That was ridiculous. Anyone can knock out anyone if they have the time to wind-up and throw a punch that is 1000000% guaranteed to land because the other dude doesn't see it coming. |
Yeah, then he was kicked right after he was SUCKER PUNCHED.
It's the Asian way, I guess.

So the Western way is to bully your way around the bar attempt to physically intimidate those who are smaller than you and then belittle them in their own country?
Or maybe this wasn't the Asian way and that guy wasn't doing things the western here and what we had was a collision of morons.
There is another fair fight rule and that is pick on someone your own size. |
