While I don't want to belittle any type of abuse, I seem to recall a thread here last month comparing national stats on this. The definition of abuse seemed to vary quite a bit.

I was going to my boxing club this morning and experienced the "snort and laugh of derision", so common among Koreans, from an adjumma.
(The "snort and laugh of derision" SALOD is an exhaling of air followed by a rolling of the eyes and an "aaaeeesh" then a mocking laugh all in quick succession).
Normally I ignore SALODs but due to a weekend of heavy drinking my hungover mind decided to take action.
I countered with a mechanical "hahahahahahaha". A more unnatural laugh I've never been able to summon.
The adjumma looked confused. Was I daring to compete in this game of mockery and social one-upping? Me - a foreign invader, her - a seasoned professional.
My hollow mechanical laughter continued to emanate from my mouth. Was I really going to follow this through?
A look of confusion came across the adjumma's face. She hadn't expected this. But she was no novice. She muttered some more profanities in Korean.
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA". My inhuman laughter was becoming louder to drown out her attempts to gain the upper hand.
What was happening here? A casual SALOD had gone wrong. This wasn't what the adjumma had expected. Where was support when she needed it? This mechanical laughter filled the air. "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA".
She got off the elevator at the same floor as I did, looked around, and went back into the elevator.
I was possessed. Were these strange un-natural noises coming from me? "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA".
Over the noise spewing from my insolent mouth I heard a "사랑해" as the adjumma entered the elevator. "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" then the door closed.

I walked into the boxing club in a haze of disbelief. I greeted the people I know with an "안녕하세요". They greeted me with the corresponding greeting and a smile. I like these people.
