My impression (after week#2) was that some of the key players were too hung-over and/or partied-out by Sunday to conduct a meeting; and - as far as I'm concerned - fast-approaching Korean winter is too fricken cold to do outdoor shoots...

nah, we were actually sick with the flu that day (one was hungover Smile ) what killed the idea was practicality and expenses.
Camera (low grade digi-cam) 1.000.000
Mics (cheap ones) 100.000 (minimum)
Costuming 200.000 (minimum)
Effects 100.000
Transport 200.000
and it builds and builds and builds, especially with locations being considered.

okay, well i'm here till september at least, so if it ever becomes a reality again, let me know! I love doing movie stuff, do it on my own for fun, just with a piece of a movie. good practice, since i want to spend my life doing things like it. also, i can do ADR, which means we could scrap the mics if we had to. just an afterthought...

My rooftop apartment is avaliable for location shoots. It has a view from Building 63 to Namsam Tower. Also, I have the table, chairs and umbrella setup for outdoor bar/ cafe type scenes.
Anyway, let me know ahead of time.

oh come on dudes!!!
excuses!! its to cold, its to expensive!
not enough people, blar blar blar.

I just found this thread and read through it..

I studied film production at the new zealand film school and even though the school was a rip off.. I did learn one valuble lesson..
rain, snow or half dead. pick up the camera and shoot!

If I an make a suggestion...

the real people who are serious about this..
need to meet.. I MEAN THE REAL PEOPLE!! the other yeah yeah im in guys NO.. they need to be told when and where..
the real key players who will be titled as producers, directors..
need to meet and really dicuss this..

MONEY! well its your baby so you pay for it..
jobs, once you have gone over the script scene by scene, prop by prop you can figure out the cost..
also shooting on Digital camera.. is fine for learning
I mean sounds like some of you guys are real serious..

get a half decent script, the last 9 pages where of so many ideas I forgot which one it is you guys have decided on..

there is a New zealand guy making a short movie, maybe some of you have heard about a writer who is found dead in a back street of itaewon, well that director michael made a movie back home low budget he financed it himself.. the lunitics ball.. and it won acclaim..
thing is.. he believed in it! he didnt make excuses..
sure it was expensive. 50K or something..
but its the same principal.. passion.. micheal is not even a director really he took some workshop classes in london..

I think some of us here have some skills, or basic ideas, studied film years ago, but have lost the touch. but have passion.
and passion is what it takes!
IF you guys want to seriously do this.. then I think we should meet up and write a script from scratch together.. not meet in a bar either.. where beer takes over!
brainstorm, from the start, I know people in the industry here in korea, if we spend all next year making short movies, learning the skills again, trying new things, and by 2007 we should be able to make a decent film to send in for consideration for film festivals
but we need to be a serious TEAM! the other players are sheep we use them when we need.. but their needs to be 3 or 4 leaders who believe in the project.. mainly to motivate each other..
we all have money, we can finance it ourselves.. passion! ill chip in a couple hundred grand a month or two if someone else believed in this project and was DEAD SERIOUS about it..

if the key players want to meet up.. PM me..
Ill happy be a key player..
but only if its serious I mean no excuses!! no hangovers, or I scored last night dont want to send the fox home! or IM broke dont have train money!
blar blar blar !!

My place is avaliable not only for shooting, for meetings as well. Also, I am serious and can realistically afford 50-75K/ month.
BTW, I have a couple of scripts I wrote if you guys want to take a look.

Its seriously a 2 mil investment- up front. That balances out to around 400.000 up front form each player (assuming the standard 5 show up). Furthermore, there has to be a strict dedication to schedule that isn't common on the ROK... Trust me, its harder than it looks.

Demonicat, you need to set up a serious meeting again.
and then you know who your star players are..
2million upfront? I think it can be done way cheaper than that..
again how can we set a budget without a script?
but 2million won.. I think Super size me was shot for less..
his only expenses were gas, hotels, and burgers hahahaha

but yeah,. step by step..
need to start with the idea..
what kind of movie is being made, what do you wish to accomplish from the movie and how much time and money can be spared.
once 1.2.3 are set..
then a realistic script is typed up.
once the script is finished , then move to pre production..

no money is needed for awhile yet.. dedication is! and thats free!

Let's keep the thread alive to generate more interest, ideas and resources...

Some thoughts for now: I think the original idea was to do some filmmaking in Korea for fun. In view of the legal uncertainties of making films in a foreign country, it certainly doesn't seem like a viable business investment. It also doesn't make sense for everyone to pitch in to buy a decent camera (the main expense) which will ultimately be owned by one person (I haven't noticed any communes around here...) So, we either need someone ready, willing and able to buy a camera for the project (I thought we had one at the first meeting...) or else share the cost of renting (if possible) needed epuipment... Because of the steady influx of new people, I think there's a good chance we can get together sufficient resources over the next couple months if we can sustain enthusiasm and develop more focus for the project on this thread...

Meant to post here but never have.

A PD150 only costs around 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 so that's *beep* all for the camera. The problem you'll have is with things like kino and dollys and tracks and stuff. As someone who's been there and done that in Korea I'd recommend that you plan to re-record the audio in a studio (good luck finding a quiet enough place in Seoul to get anything decent on location).

I was talking to a director a couple of weeks ago just hashing around ideas (she's Korean but she works in the States -- thinking about doing some stuff here) and she figures that even a low-budget feature would be at least 50,000 dollars.

I say (and I probably shouldn't because I'm not involved) that you just make a bunch of shorts and if you like them put them all together with a loose Monty Python's Meaning of Life type of feature (lots of little bits strung together to make a somewhat meaningful whole). At the very least the scheduling will be easier because you can shoot a 5 to 10 minute short every weekend and you don't have to worry about getting actors and weather back for another day.
