Thats because you lack any semblance of taste. Queen are probably the worst band of all time. |

Just want to say it's good to see you go back to using a frame from the Scorpio episode instead on the Lisa the Iconoclast one. Much better. |
It does make sense for me to have an avatar from "You Only Move Twice" vs the "Lisa the Iconoclast" episode |

Having NOT read the previous 9 pages of responses, it's my opinion that neither of the OPs 2 choices are the best rock 'n roll bands of the 80s. I'm not too sure they should be considered rock 'n roll to begin with. In fact, I would question the very age of the OP...
BTW, the Slate article I believe the OP is talking about, is not suggesting that either U2 or REM are the best of the 80s but rather which one of the 2 was the best in the 80s.

Lately I 've been listening to the pre/punk stuff. The basic New York scene from CBGB's.Like Richard Hell and Voidiods or Johny Thunders and the Heatbreakers. Its amazing how Johny Thunders sounds so much like the Sex Pistols particularly how Steve Jones copied his guitar playing.
U-2 in one of the most disgustingly boring bands on the planet. Bono makes feel like throwing up. The way he just preaches politics just to make up for his complete lack of talent. |
Apparently, millions of people disagree, my man. Frankly, I can't understand what's wrong with "Where the streets have no name?"
I also really loved that song "With or without you.....". I like more of their older stuff from "The Joshua Tree". I think it's too bad that Stevie Ray Vaughn died. He was great. By the way, no one mentioned Eric Clapton.
He was pretty good as well......
Skid Row "We are the youth gone wild...", "18 and life".
Guns 'n Rose "Take me down to paradise city...."
Weird Al was a great rock comedian.. He was his own genre... |
I don't care what the masses think. A lot of mullets love U-2. Does that make them cool. Does that make that idiotic looking hairstyle any less repulsive. Bono sported a mullet for most of the eighties too.
Alot of rednecks got into U-2 in the eighties. I mean by renecks these guys use to pick fights with anyone who looked different. Once it was no longer cool to listen to old school metal these guys got into U-2 |
I think this is about the best response I've heard yet. It's safe to say U2 and REM were just two bands that had a pretty sizable following not unlike Dokken, Guns & Roses, LA Guns, Poison, Billy Joel, Huey Lewis, Sting, etc....
Trying to pick out a couple bands who were "The best" is idiotic. |

I love Talking Heads. My favorite 80s acts are:
R.E.M. (They are my second favorite band. Period.)
Cocteau Twins
The Fall
Peter Gabriel (not listing Genesis because their best stuff was from the 70s)
Sonic Youth (hard to beat Daydream Nation)
Talking Heads
XTC
King Crimson (Discipline and Beat)
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
The Pixies
New Order
Talk Talk
The Smiths
Slayer (Reign in Blood and South of Heaven)
Einstuerzende Neubauten and industrial in general (Suicide and Skinny Puppy)
Bad Brains
Black Uhuru
Adrian Belew
Echo and the Bunnymen
Cabaret Voltaire
Depeche Mode
Devo (borderline since my fav stuff is from late 70s)
post-punk in general...the best thing to come out of the late 70s and 80s.
I like the 80s. heh |
