There are differing versions about what happened. According to the police report, Gates showed his Harvard University ID. Harvard University IDs don't have the person's home address on them so it would not have established that Gates was at his own residence.

You still wouldn't suspect an old guy like Gates of breaking and entering, nor would you expect someone to have a fake Harvard ID. If the officer was following protocol by requesting ID, however, then of course he had to stay and request it.

It's scary to think you're teaching English.

Maybe it's your avatar? Hmm...

Wake up call to RJjr:

It doesn't matter if he was minding his own business. Crowley was responding to a 911 call about a possible burglary in progress.

Hah! They have changed the cards many times because people were making fakes. Actually, last year a Korean-American undergrad student was accused of being involved in a fake Harvard ID & state drivers licenses scam.

Actually, there have been many problems with the ID's. Visiting professors/students don't always get ID cards, but these library cards that look extremely similar to the ID cards. They say "Harvard" in big letters and the person's name and picture are on it. They are changing the library cards soon because people were gaining access to places where they were not supposed to be.

At Widener Library, you need to swipe an ID card to get past security and then to get into the Stacks (where the books are). People with library privileges were getting into the stacks and stealing materials from special/antique collections.

edit: I wrote "Korean" but I meant "ko-am."

I'd be curious to actually read the different statements (if they are ever made public).

Oh my, I made a grammatical mistake! Heaven forbid.

Mind commenting on what I actually wrote, or are you simply trolling my posts again looking for something to attack me on?

Then we have no problems the next time some ajumma calls the police on a group of foreigners for whatever it is they might be doing?

What may I ask is your reaction to those FTs who got busted for their home poker game? What happened to Prof. Gates has and will happen to FTs in Korea, and you can bet you will hear their self-righteous claims of racial-intolerance.

Don't muddy the waters with things that are not relavant to the tpoic at hand. A racist black man showed his true colors towards a white police officer and the situation was made worse by the President. It makes one wonder if what Glen Beck said is not right.

In other words what I said hits too close to home, weakens an argument, and speaks too much truth to the human condition involving this argument, therefore it is being labled 'out of bounds'.

It is extremely relevant to the topic at hand. If someone is going to argue that 'just doing your job' has no bearing on racism, then all those times the K-Cops are 'just doing their job' should not be viewed with complaint.

But when the shoe is on the other foot, we of course, have a differing view.

Such incidents in Korea and the U.S. should make us think long and hard about the 'just doing their job defense'.

In the end, I agree with the just doing their job defense for Crowley and the K-Cops, though I think Crowley should have left once he determined that there was no burglary. And Gates' continued ramblings on this matter are wearing my patience. Far better to make it an issue of property rights and such than race.

Exactly. After the CPN incident, a lot of people on this website were upset about being viewed as a potential child rapist. I didn't see any of us saying, "But we're white guys, so that automatically makes us 3 times more likely to molest children, and also 60 times more likely to deal drugs. Double those figures for Canadians. The police should watch us all." Laughing

It's kind of like how a lot of people on here like to say that Koreans and Muslims never invent anything. By reading it, you'd think that each teacher would have at least one patent and several more pending. Rolling Eyes
