What do you need to join CostCo? Do I need my Alien Card?

Also, what can you get there that you can't get in Homeplus etc?

I'm from Ireland so I'm not familiar with CostCo. Thanks.

I've only been in Korea 2 months. And I've only been to Costco twice. I live right next to a giant Homeplus and get most of my food there.. That being said. Costco has excellent cuts of meat (imported Australian steaks, good lean ground beef, chicken, etc). I got lots of Pasta sauces that I use at home that can't find here, affordable and high quality cheese. Western style bacon (salty yum!). Kirkland brand name stuff is great! You might buy more then your used too because its sold in bulk. But I think its worth it

Even if your not familiar with costco (or priceclub) you will be familiar with the stuff they sell.. great grocery store...

I found Costco to be great for nearly everything I needed to cook Western meals. Yes, many things cost more but on account that they have to be shipped here, its not that much more.

I researched the cost of living in Seoul as best I could before arriving. A lot of it came from websites like this. And honestly, I have to think many ESL teachers have never truly lived on their own before coming here. For instance, people complain about the price of cheese in Korea... Really? 9,900 won gets you 1kg of sharp cheddar at Costco. In Canada that costs over $10. In the States it's about $7 plus tax.

At Costco you can get cheap cans of tomatoes and beans, pasta, rice, etc. to make whatever. Hashbrowns, frozen pasta, berries etc. are all roughly the same price as back at home or up to 10-15 per cent more.

And mac and cheese was $15 for a 15-pack. Not bad. Yah, it's Kirkland and not KD but all you have to do is shred some sharp cheddar in there and you're golden...

In other words, don't complain, or go eat bibimbap. You live in Korea, what do you expect?

And the slices of pizza were spot on after a few hours of shopping - just as good as your grease ball Mediterranean joints back in NA...

Can I get a costco card if I just have a tourist visa? Or do you need to have an alien card? Thanks!

Maybe, if you have a passport. I got mine with an ARC so I'm not certain.

On the onions topic, I thought it strange K's loaded up their plate with it. But upon closer examination, they mix it with mustard and pile it onto their pizzas or chicken rolls. It becomes a topping or a dipping sauce for them. I mean, I love onions but this seems extreme....

I have photographic evidence that this is not true. They do take big old bites of onion.

Perhaps the people you saw were being polite or something. Wink

Upon closer examination, I guess you are right. It does seem odd. Wonder why they do that?

Yeah, I got a bag of the chicken nuggets.

Oh, it appears you did Rolling Eyes

Costco is good for furniture and occasionally electronics. As for food, I'll stick to my corner veggie stands and fish markets any day.

For dinner tonight I'm planning a nice pan-seared halibut steak, bathed in lemon and basil. For sides I'll have steamed asparagus with fresh cracked black pepper and dijon mustard and a serving of minced apples in brown rice with just a dusting of cinnamon. All this will be accompanied by a glass (or two) of a 96 Australian pinot noir I came across at Hyundai Dept. Store last week.

Where did you buy the basil, asparagus, cracked pepper, dijon mustard, brown rice and cinnamon?? They don't any of those things in my local mart.

I just bought some dijon mustard at E-mart... not sure about the other stuff.

I had Costco membership when I was in Seoul - remember you have to pay for that - at least I did. If you're really into cooking, I'd recommend it. If you have a hectic routine, and don't always find the time or energy to prepare a meal, then it's not necessary. I always found myself somewhere in between - so I was an Emart person. Emart pizza is far superior to Costco pizza - at least the Costco I was a member of - the one near Janghandong - whatever one that is - crap greasy pizza there.
The Emart pizza is the way the Costco pizza prob. used to be.
I went to my local emart recently and got good 'Mainland' NZ cheese, and American pepper jack. I got the herbs I wanted. I don't remember Emart or Lotte mart having such good selection last time I was here. Lottemart pizza is crud though - always cold when you're there and nearly always potato topping ones prepared, but good alcohol selection. I don't get the hype with Costco unless you're a cookophile, or a merchant, or bar / restaurant owner - then you'd benefit greatly from membership I guess.
I have 3 markets near me - and I agree with some other posters about the value of these - they're more recession proof and cut out the middle man, so you really get what you pay for. These markets are gold dust. I would never in a million years choose Costco over a decent market in this day and age, but that's me. Same for Home+ - not needed for me personally. When foreigners first came to Korea they didn't have any of these foreign luxuries and their experience was at least more Korean.
I'd hate for everyone in the world to be eating from Costcos - no offense!

i was at costco last night and saw an ajumma make a container out of tin foil and filled it up with the diced onions. then she went in for a second round. then she took bundles of napkins. then she went to another napkin dispenser and took all of those. she did 4 rounds of that. really really annoying to see. really really effing annoying.

i like costco, but wish there was more stuff there.

Which Costco did you visit? Some are bigger than others and stock more stuff.

The best is the one in Ilsan because it's the newest and largest. Sangbong is fine but, like the others, it gets super crowded. The one near Yeongdeungpo is the oldest and smallest. Is there something specific you were looking for?

I always shop at the Yeongdeundpo store. Most weekends it so crowded they have employees conducting carriages (carts) at all junctios throughout the store. Rounding the corner quickly by the candies so Jr doesn't get ideas, I got stuck in traffic. Wasn't long before Jr had some truly useless gummy stlye candies. At least Costco attracts decent numbers of milfs in shorts, skirts and sweats.
