As an aside, did anyone listen to Downie's post-game interview? It was a little like listening to John Rambo give a speech on foreign policy....
Regarding the Wendell Clark video - I thought he had his elbow up and, if you watch closely in slo-mo, it looks to me like he kind of did leave his feet but just got stopped by Bell's body...
A couple of other interesting things I saw is how slowly the goaltender (is that Kelly Hrudy?) initially comes over to cover the near-side post, and the lack of advertising on those beautiful white boards - when exactly was that game? |
The game with the Clark-Bell hit was '85 or so. Give or take a year. |

20 f#$%ing games for THAT?!
2 minutes for charging, in my books (if that)... if he hadn't have left his feet, it would have been 100% clean...
the real rule is: keep your head up, even in preseason! i can't believe the NHL is bowing to the court of public opinion... what a farce
hits to the head do NOT require a new penalty! if a guy's got his head down and you hit his head with your shoulder (and your feet are on the ice) it's NOT a penalty! an elbow is an elbow, no matter where you hit the guy... |
I prefer 'old time hockey' for the most part. But with the size and speed of players today, and with the equipment they wear, hits to the head have to be addressed.
I used to hate watching international hockey, but I have come to enoy it. At least the calls are consistent, they haven't lost control of the game, and it is pretty fast.
I don't know what the NHL is thinking. Lets make sure we call EVERY hook (even the imaginary ones) but stick our heads in the sand re: hits to the head.
As far as new rules...You're right in that they probably don't need t make a new rule. They can just enforce the ones they have (elbowing, intent to injure, etc), but I do think they have to look at hits to the head.
I also agree that Downie was not punished for the act itself...he was punished due to public opinion. He's also not a 'goon' as a lot of people have made him out to be. I've watched him play for a cople of years now. If he can reign in his temper, he'll be an excellent addition to any team he plays for.
As an aisde, a lot of people (fans) have been referring to these exhibtion games as 'meaningless'. For us as fans, maybe...But there is NOTHING meaningless about exhibition games for guys trying to make the team. They are playing HARD. Don't confuse pre-season exhibition with the All-Star game. for example. |

I wonder if Downie even knew that McCammond passed the puck. Looks like Downie had him in his sights and too late to avoid hitting McCammond. He left his feet, so the injury sustained by McCammond should cost Downie a few games, maybe 5-6, but 20 games is a little much. I hope the AHL ignores the suspension and lets the guy play.
Collie is way too inconsistant with his calls. |

I agree. If if he had seen McCammond pass the puck, it wasn't a late hit. You CAN hit someone without the puck in hockey as long as they were the last person to touch the puck, and it's not too late.
NHL needs to be consistent.
BTW, Downie leaves his feet at the last moment, but I amnot sure that he jumps. I'll have to watch again to see if his knees bend. At that speed, turning abrubtly will cause you to leave your feet, too. |

He definitely left his feet. He jumped and got a full headstart for momentum.
20 games is pretty harsh though. It wasn't that bad. At most 3 games, but I'm thinking 5 minutes to a game misconduct. But who knows with the new rules or how they're regulating everything?
I agree that hits to the head have to be addressed although I don't know if they already are. |

Well, at least he didn't hook him. Then he would've been in REAL trouble. Or imagine if he tried to buy the Nashville Predators...Gone for the season...and spayed... |

Yeah, I haven't watched hockey in a while, but my favorite team is the Flyers. I can be objective though. I just don't see 20 games as a good call. Maybe it's a warning.
Pretty soon, they'll all be playing tiddly winks. |

| Don't overreact. There is not going to be a crackdown on legitimate hard hits. Downie skated all the way from the red line on his head hunting mission. No sympathy for the a-hole here. |

Yeah, he did make a good run at him. LOL. No rule against skating though. And he couldn't have seen it coming that far away. I don't think anticipation is high on his list of skills.
You'd have to think that if they're going to give 20 games for something like that, everyone is going to be hesitant about hitting. Then what? 5 minutes for body checking? Soccer nets instead of ice hockey nets? Then what? A bigger puck? Jesus Christ! |

| Maybe they'll get rid of the ice, too. Everyone will play on a big slab of medal with magnetic skates. It will still be called hockey, but not ice hockey. |

these kind of bs calls almost (almost!) make me feel better about not seeing any games here in korea... if you can get 20 games for a hard check, what's next? penalties for swearing? hurting someone's feelings? not playing "nice"?
i think that mcgratton should have received the 20 game suspension for explicitly saying he was going on a head-hunting mission the next time they play the flyers! IMO premediation means intent to injure... all downie intended to do was to knock a man off the puck - it's not his fault the guy skated right into him! |

I wouldnt expect much from a Maple Laughs fan. Talk about the biggest losers on the planet. And I know, I lived in TO for a very long time..it was fun seeing the Laughs lose...much like watching the Bills tank in the superbpwls...and then listening to talk radio as the fans bellyached. It was a good feeling after having been force fed Leafs stories all year. The Fan, talk about the most one dimensional sports radio station in North America. Is that retard Stormin Norman still there? I would have expected him to have jumped from the CN tower by now.
Hockey is still a stupid game. A fringe one at that. |

uh oh... whenever this guy ^ starts posting, you know the thread is dead...
dude: if you want to discuss the merits of hockey (or whatever sport or game or etc), please start your own thread... this thread is about a specific incident, not your personal feelings about hockey... if you hate hockey so much, why are you wasting your time posting here? |
