Can you guys give an investment newbie an tips on how to go about investing in stocks?

I know there's some good money in IPO's and I regularly keep track of the news and money channels.

Is it better in the long run to have a qualified professional manage a portfolio or to invest on whims?

Also, what are the websites that let you get started trading in international markets?

Sharebuilder is good place to go. You can buy stocks for $4 a trade.

Personally, I like stocks that pay a dividend. You can use your dividends to buy more shares and your investment keeps growing.

My IRA portfolio includes Citibank, Pfizer , Southern Copper and LG Phillips.

LG Phillips stock went up 50% this past year and is the only one not paying a dividend.

The others are paying a dividend around 4.5% now. Southern Copper went up a lot too, but Citibank and Pfizer went down a little. I am , of course, not worried about these two companies future prospects.

Just be sure the company is not paying out more than 75% of it's earning in dividends. That is a warning sign.

I had considered 53Bank , but it is paying 76% of its earnings out to support that 4.8% dividend. So I bought more Citibank. ( at a lower price than my original investment)
