And then I have plenty more stories from friends or people I met when I was there. Maybe thats why they all carry handguns either round their waist or under the car seat?

I know one person who carries around a handgun...everyone thinks he is a *beep*. I don't want to be rude , but i'm not sure we know the same class of south africans .

You don't live in South Africa . I do . Let me tell you how it really is . I have never met anyone....or have one close friend who has EVER known anyone personally who was a victim of violent crime .

You and everyone you have ever met must be really lucky.

Here are some 'crimes' that were committed "close to home."
In addition to my being hijacked and taken hostage, my aunt has been hijacked twice, my cousin has been hijacked once, my best friend has been mugged, on a seperate occassion people broke into his parents house (held them hostage for over 3 hours..assaulted his mother and his father had *BITE* marks on his face), another friend's (I was best man at his wedding) father was held hostage in his house for a couple of hours while they trashed and robbed the place and roughed him up.

A bit further from home: My mother's friends son was shot dead in an attempted hijacking, my highschool math teacher was hijacked and murdered, a friend of my mother was raped in her house.

So for you to tell me that crime is not a problem in South Africa or that I only say that crime is a problem because I have a political agenda is not only ignorant but insulting.

Crime is a huge problem in South Africa . My point is it's not something that happens to white people , who are the ones who act the victim, nearly as much as to other races . As I demonstrated less than 365 white people die a year due to violent crime . less than one a day...so on a day to day basis to worry about being murdered is to worry about a 6 million to one odds . Not fair perhaps as it's on going and 1 a day is a lot and far too high ....
But if , as you are hinting , everybody has had a family member murdered and plenty of friends etc (simply not the case at ALL) it would be much much higher . So my position is crime in south africa is high....but certainly not nearly as high as some people would make you believe . I still suggest "today I might be killed" is something that never goes through most peoples minds when they wake up in the morning...yet give them a website and suddenly their attention turns from rugby and biltong to "Everyday I fear for my life"

There's a lot of nonsense and exageration going on too for purpose of poltical agenda...and you must admit that .

There is PLENTY of petty crime in South Africa . But even given that , this example seems extreme . Mark is obviously the type of person who likes to make a story more "colorful" ...i bet when he travelled to cambodia he also shot a cow with a bazooka and threw hand grenades into chicken coups....* rolls eyes .

Actually, no, he's not that type of person. And considering I MET the other people in Germany and heard the stories from them, I believe it.

Then you have a tiny family, perhaps in gov't, protected, and very few friends.

To quote a friend here in Korea, who IS from South Africa, about life IN South Africa.

"You'd have to consider which market had been hit by AK-47s and decide if they'd get hit two days in a row..."

Yeah I heard those kind of stories too when I was growing up, about the country I lived in.

God help you if you ever disagreed with them. They would come down on you like a stack of bricks if you disagreed.

Peace to him.
