Just because I'm from there doesn't mean that I hate it when people trash it. I could trash the place for hours, and hours, and hours, et cetera...
PS Can't watch the video now, I'm at work. No sound. |

There's 8 fires all around the county - from north, east and south county! Didn't think anything can be as bad as the Cedar Creek fire, but they're all saying this is the worse fire in all of SoCal in modern times |
Yeah, the Cedar Creek fire was crazy. When my fiancee talked to her dad and mom this morning (in Mira Mesa) they said they have their car parked and are ready to leave if they need to. However, Mira Mesa High School is an evacuation center so they feel pretty certain they are safe for now. I can't imagine anything worse than the fires four years ago, this is very depressing for us. |

Just because it happened in America doesn't mean I should care. Bunch of dead yuppies, no skin off my back.
I'm more worried about Iraqi women and children who live in fear. |

The weather is looking So (Cal) nice but it sure isn't helping the situation:

I just don't like how one death in America equals out to thousands everywhere else. We're all supposed to be solemn and respectful when Americans die, but when people in any other country die it isn't as big as a deal.
No, I don't want any Americans to die. I hope that everyone in the fire is okay. But, more people die all over the world from various other natural disasters/disasters/wars/famines/whatever and its hard to get even people's attention about it let alone sympathy. Even when the scale of the catastrophe is significantly larger than 9/11 (such as dead women and children who are direct results of combat in Iraq).
I'm just really sick of how people tell me I'm not sympathetic enough to American losses when the same thing wouldn't be said if a large group of people from X other country died. Its a very irritating phenomenon. Lest to mention, these people are from Malibu and suburban California of all places. Like their lives have been miserable up until their homes were lost (likely to be replaced by insurance) and their toy poodles got turned into ashtrays. |

umm yeah.. so you decided to participate on this thread because.. congrats, you just fit yourself into the ugly Canadian stereotype, whipping out that tired old argument, which has little to do with this thread. Ever think this thread was started because some of us either live in socal or are from there (such as the OP himself)? The dude wasn't saying "pity us americans! god, it sucks to be us!" but merely wanted to talk about it since he probably doesn't know anyone close by in korea who has any interest in the socal fires.
perhaps if you had not said anything, this thread would have died. nice move. |

Gee you Canadian suburbanites sure are hardcore. Don't forget that - I'm s ure the both of you are as suburban as anyone losing their home. And also, where'd you get the idea that everyone in southern California was rich, or that the fires affected only Malibu? Ignorant.
Guess I shouldn't have given a crap when that Canadian university was shot up. I'll be waiting with baited breath for some deaths in Canada to show up in the news - I hope they cover those stories! Unlike deaths in Iraq, it would certainly cheer me up! |

About publishing deaths around the world: yes, it's true. But Canadian hands aren't clean of this either. Canada fought in Afghanistan for awhile...How many Afghan deaths were reported? How many Canadian?
As bucheon_bum said, it's a tired argument, and it has crossed everyone's mind if they have a high school education. You're not enlightening anyone. However, do you think it's wise/appropriate/humane (if you consider yourselves such liberals) to publicly mock people whose families might be affected by a natural disaster? Would you go on a forum and mock the Hurricane Katrina disaster? Or an earthquake in Turkey? Or the families of dead soldiers (be them American or other) or dead civilians?
You don't have to voice every little anti-American thought in your head, just like I don't voice every anti-Canadian thought in my head. Bottle it up and save it for Rocky Mountain Tavern. |

Wow, I forget why I stick to sports on this damn board. Even then I have some moron chiming in "American football is not a real sport." Let me educate some of you. Yes, there are many rich people in Malibu with nice homes on the beach getting burned to the ground, that is still no reason to laugh at their misfortune. For all we know some of those people may have worked hard their entire lives for their lavish lifestyle. However, the rest of Southern California is not eating off silver platters until they can dip into their trust fund. Let me speak on behalf of my home in San Diego. There have been many citizens evacuated from their homes and have had their homes destroyed in the fire from Escondido to Chula Vista, from Ramona to Tecate. You have no clue what 'type' of people live there, hardly the rich Southern California stereotypes you have spewed your hate towards.
Personally, like I have mentioned on this thread, I have a brother and two of my best friends fighting these fires. My fiancee has many family members who are hardly rich that have no idea if the home they evacuated has been burned to the ground. The reason I started this thread was to vent the frustration of being away from my home while it burns to the ground and maybe talk about it to other expats from the region. I guess I should have realized that the world is a shhitty place everywhere so I shouldn't complain when my and my fiancee's family and friends are in danger and some homeless, and we may or may not have a home when we go back to America. The next time I start a thread should I first post a poll to see if the topic is relevant enough to be worthy for this board, or should I just PM the people on this thread to ask for their opinion on the worthiness of my potential thread topic?
I mean holy shiit, what's wrong with some of you people? How in the world can a thread like this be turned into anti-American banter? |

what do you expect. they move from their little insular, isolated islands in eastern canada to insular, isolated korea. all they know about the world is from TV torrents they download. yes, everyone in southern california lives just like The OC portrays . meanwhile, i'll keep calling my single mother (GASP!!!!) to make sure she can safely evacuate with her cat if she needs to.
grow up, yuppies. |

Yeah, I don't know where people get their stereotypes of California. I don't think they realize how large California, let alone Southern California, actually is. I hope your mom remains safe. |

What they should do is have controlled burns every decade or so.
Thats what occurs in the natural fire cycle. The woodlands are able to clean out and rejuventae. When you have a situation whereby the forest does not get its needed frequent burn through, then a lot of dead undergrowth builds up too much. When it finally catches, it causes a far bigger and more dangerous fire than normal. which is what we see now. |
